Car Engine and Gearbox Mount Guide UAE (2026)

Engine and gearbox mounts are rubber-and-metal components that support the engine and transmission, keep them correctly positioned in the engine bay, and absorb the vibration and torque reactions produced by the drivetrain. In UAE, extreme heat accelerates rubber mount deterioration, making this a more common repair than in cooler climates. This guide explains what UAE drivers need to know about mount maintenance.

What Engine and Gearbox Mounts Do

Without mounts, the engine and gearbox would vibrate directly through the vehicle chassis and into the cabin. Mounts provide isolation between the drivetrain and the body using rubber bushings bonded to steel brackets. Some modern vehicles use hydraulic mounts (filled with fluid) that provide variable damping. Hydraulic mounts provide better isolation but are more expensive to replace when they fail.

UAE Heat and Mount Deterioration

Rubber compounds used in engine and gearbox mounts are designed to last 8 to 12 years in moderate climates. In UAE conditions — where engine bay temperatures can reach 100 to 120 degrees Celsius in summer — the rubber element hardens, cracks, and loses its damping properties in 5 to 8 years or 100,000 to 150,000 km. This is why UAE mechanics commonly find multiple failed mounts together on vehicles in this age and mileage range.

Types of Mount Failure

Mount failure progresses through stages. Early deterioration involves the rubber hardening and developing surface cracks — the mount still holds position but provides less vibration isolation, so the cabin becomes noisier. Advanced deterioration occurs when the rubber tears or separates from the metal bracket — the mount no longer restrains the drivetrain and clunking begins. Complete failure is when the mount collapses entirely, the engine or gearbox drops in the bay, and the drivetrain contacts the chassis or body.

Inspect at Every Major Service

Engine and gearbox mounts should be visually inspected at every major service or any time the vehicle is on a ramp. The inspection takes one minute — the mechanic looks for collapsed rubber, tears, oil contamination (oil softens rubber and accelerates failure), and excessive drivetrain movement. Catching a deteriorating mount before it fails completely is always cheaper than emergency repair after collapse.
