Car Glass Cracked UAE 2026: Repair, Replace or Claim Insurance

4 Jul 2026 3 min read

A cracked windscreen or side glass is one of the most common vehicle damage issues in the UAE. Desert road conditions, truck debris on Sheikh Zayed Road and E11, and extreme temperature swings between outdoor heat and cold air conditioning all contribute to glass cracking. This guide covers what to do, whether to repair or replace, and what the law says.

Common Causes of Car Glass Cracks in UAE

Flying stones and gravel thrown by trucks and heavy vehicles are the single biggest cause of windscreen cracks in the UAE. Emirates Road (E611) and Dubai to Abu Dhabi highways have high truck traffic that creates constant stone throw risk. The second major cause is thermal stress: UAE summer temperatures of 45 to 50 degrees Celsius heat the glass surface, while air conditioning cools the interior glass surface, creating stress that turns minor chips into long cracks. Even parking a car in direct sun with a cold interior from overnight air conditioning can cause an existing chip to propagate overnight.

Chip Repair vs Full Windscreen Replacement

A chip smaller than a one-dirham coin (25mm) that is not in the driver sightline can usually be repaired with resin injection, costing AED 80 to AED 200 in the UAE. The repair takes 20 to 45 minutes and restores structural integrity, though a faint mark usually remains. Once a crack extends beyond 30cm, or if it enters the driver sightline (the area swept by wipers directly in front of the driver), replacement is required. A crack that reaches the glass edge cannot be repaired and always requires replacement.

Is a Cracked Windscreen Illegal in UAE?

Yes. Under UAE traffic regulations, a cracked windscreen that impairs the driver sightline is an offence that can result in a traffic fine and vehicle impoundment during inspection. During UAE Salik vehicle testing (the periodic roadworthiness inspection), a crack in the driver sightline will cause a test failure. A chip or crack outside the sightline is a grey area but should be repaired before it propagates into a failure area.

Does Insurance Cover Windscreen Cracks in UAE?

Comprehensive motor insurance policies in the UAE typically include windscreen cover, either as a standard inclusion or as an affordable add-on. Most insurers in UAE require you to use their approved repairer panel. Windscreen claims generally do not affect your no-claims discount. Third-party only (TPL) insurance does not cover your own windscreen. Always check your policy wording or call your insurer before paying for replacement out of pocket.

Side Glass and Rear Glass Cracks UAE

Door glass and rear windscreen cracks in UAE are less common than front windscreen damage but occur due to accidental impact, attempted break-ins, or thermal stress in older vehicles. Side door glass is tempered (not laminated like windscreens) and typically shatters rather than cracks. A cracked side glass must be replaced, not repaired. Costs range from AED 150 to AED 800 for door glass and AED 300 to AED 1200 for rear windscreens depending on make and whether the glass has heating elements or antennas embedded.
