How Handbrake Cables Work
The handbrake cable is a steel wire inside a flexible outer sheath. On most rear-wheel and all-wheel drive vehicles, a single cable from the handbrake lever connects to an equaliser bar, which then splits into two shorter cables running to each rear wheel. On some vehicles there are two full-length cables running directly from the lever to the rear wheels without an equaliser. When the lever is applied, the cables pull on the rear brake assembly — either squeezing brake pads against a disc or pressing brake shoes against a drum — to hold the vehicle stationary.
Over time, cables stretch, develop fraying, or suffer from corrosion inside the outer sheath. In the UAE, high temperatures cause the outer sheath to deteriorate faster than in cooler climates, and dust infiltration adds friction that eventually causes the cable to stick in its housing.
Signs You Need Handbrake Cable Replacement
A handbrake that has reached the end of its adjustment range is the clearest sign that cable replacement is needed. If your mechanic has adjusted the cable to the maximum extent of the adjuster and the lever still travels too far, the cable must be replaced. Other signs include visible fraying where the cable meets the lever or rear brake assembly, a cable that feels stiff or requires heavy lever force to engage, a cable that does not release fully causing the rear brakes to drag and the car to pull to one side, and a snapping sensation if the cable has partially broken internally.
Cable Replacement vs Adjustment: Which Do You Need?
Adjustment restores tension to a cable that has stretched within its designed range. It is a temporary measure that buys time before eventual replacement. If a cable has stretched beyond adjustment limits, or if it is visibly damaged, replacement is the only permanent fix. A competent mechanic will inspect the cable condition and advise accordingly rather than simply adjusting a cable that is close to failure. Doing both rear cables at the same visit is good practice since they have similar service lives and the labour cost is largely shared.

Parts for a standard handbrake cable cost AED 150 to AED 300 per cable, depending on the vehicle. Labour typically adds AED 100 to AED 200, bringing the total to AED 250 to AED 500 per cable. Replacing both rear cables at the same time usually costs AED 400 to AED 800 all-in. Rear drum brake vehicles are generally less expensive to work on than disc brake models.
