Car Inspection Checklist UAE 2026: RTA, Pre-Purchase & Periodic

2 Jul 2026 2 min read

Whether you’re buying a used car, preparing for the annual Mulkiya renewal, or just want confidence in your vehicle’s condition, a thorough car inspection checklist is essential. This guide covers what UAE mechanics and vehicle inspectors check — and what you should check yourself.

Annual RTA/Traffic Department Vehicle Inspection Checklist

In Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and other emirates, cars over 3 years old (or at defined intervals by emirate) must pass a roadworthiness inspection before Mulkiya renewal. The RTA-approved inspection at EPPCO, Tasjeel, or similar centres covers:

  • Lights: headlights, tail lights, indicators, hazard lights, brake lights
  • Brakes: front and rear braking efficiency test on a dynamometer
  • Tyres: tread depth, condition, pressure
  • Steering: play, alignment, power steering function
  • Windscreen: cracks, wipers, washers
  • Emissions: exhaust check (pass/fail CO levels)
  • VIN/chassis number: verified against registration documents
  • Seatbelts: all positions tested
  • Horn: functional check
  • Suspension: visible check for leaks or damage

Cost: AED 120–220 depending on vehicle type and inspection centre.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist (Used Cars)

Before buying a used car, have an independent mechanic inspect it. Here’s what a thorough pre-purchase inspection should cover:

Exterior

  • Panel gaps: inconsistent gaps indicate previous accident repair
  • Paint match: check all panels in direct sunlight for colour variation
  • Undercarriage: rust, bent chassis rails, fresh paint over old damage
  • Glass: cracks, chips, or non-OEM replacements

Engine Bay

  • Oil: colour, level, evidence of milky residue (coolant contamination)
  • Coolant: level and colour (should be clear or green, not rusty brown)
  • Belts and hoses: cracks, fraying, or evidence of leaks
  • Battery: age, terminal condition
  • VIN plate: present and matches documents

Interior

  • AC: cold air within 60 seconds on a hot UAE day; no unusual smells
  • All electrics: windows, mirrors, central locking, sunroof
  • Dashboard warning lights: start engine and check all clear
  • Odometer: compare to service history; use RTA history check

Test Drive

  • Brakes: no vibration or pulling to one side
  • Transmission: smooth shifts, no hesitation
  • Steering: straight tracking, no vibration at speed
  • Suspension: listen for clunks over speed bumps (very common in UAE)

Periodic Maintenance Inspection Checklist (Every 10,000 km)

  • Engine oil and filter change
  • Tyre rotation and pressure check
  • Brake pad thickness check
  • AC filter and cabin filter check
  • Fluid top-ups: brake, steering, coolant, washer
  • Battery health test
  • Belts and hoses visual inspection
