Car Insurance in UAE: Types, Costs and Requirements Guide 2025

Car insurance is mandatory in the UAE for all registered vehicles, and selecting the right level of cover is important for both legal compliance and financial protection. The UAE insurance market offers a wide range of products from basic third-party liability to comprehensive policies with agency repair, roadside assistance, and other benefits. This guide explains the main types of UAE car insurance, how premiums are calculated, and what to consider when choosing a policy.

UAE Car Insurance Legal Requirements

All vehicles driven on UAE public roads must be covered by a minimum of third-party liability insurance. Third-party insurance covers the cost of injury and property damage caused by the insured vehicle to third parties. It does not cover the insured vehicle itself. Without valid insurance, a UAE vehicle cannot be registered or renewed, and driving without insurance is a traffic offence subject to fines and vehicle impoundment. Insurance policies must be issued by an insurer licensed by the UAE Insurance Authority.

Third-Party vs Comprehensive Insurance in UAE

Third-party insurance covers injury to other persons and damage to other vehicles and property caused by the insured vehicle. It is the minimum legal requirement and carries the lowest premium. It provides no cover for the policyholder vehicle itself. Comprehensive insurance covers third-party liability as required by law, plus damage to the insured vehicle from collision, fire, theft, natural disasters, and other specified perils. Comprehensive policies also typically include roadside assistance, either directly or via an assistance network. The agency repair option, available on comprehensive policies for newer vehicles, requires all repairs to be conducted at an authorised manufacturer dealership using genuine parts.

Car Insurance Costs in UAE

Comprehensive car insurance premiums in UAE typically range from 1.5% to 3.5% of the vehicle value per annum, depending on the insurer, vehicle age and model, driver profile, and selected benefits. A vehicle valued at AED 100,000 might attract a comprehensive premium of AED 1,500 to AED 3,500 annually. Third-party only premiums are significantly lower, typically AED 600 to AED 1,500 per year for most passenger vehicles. Comparison websites including Souqalmal, Policybazaar UAE, and individual insurer websites allow drivers to compare premiums quickly. No Claims Discount (NCD) rewards drivers with a clean claims history with reduced premiums at renewal, typically reducing the premium by 5% to 30% depending on the number of claim-free years.

UAE Insurance Claim Process

In the event of a road accident in UAE, the driver must obtain an official police report from the relevant emirate traffic authority before the insurance claim can be accepted. In Dubai, the RTA accident reporting system allows minor accidents to be reported digitally. The police report is submitted to the insurer along with the claim form and photographs of the damage. The insurer then arranges for a damage assessment either at the workshop or at an insurance assessment centre. Repair is authorised to a workshop (agency or non-agency depending on the policy) and the vehicle is repaired. The policyholder pays any applicable excess as specified in the policy schedule.
