Types of Parking Brake Systems in UAE Cars
Every car on UAE roads is fitted with some form of parking brake, also known as the handbrake or emergency brake. The system exists to hold the vehicle stationary when parked and to serve as a backup if the main hydraulic brakes fail. There are two main types: the traditional cable-operated handbrake and the electronic parking brake (EPB).
The cable handbrake is the older design, found on most cars manufactured before 2015 and on many modern budget and mid-range vehicles. A steel cable runs from the lever or foot pedal to a mechanical linkage at the rear brakes, clamping the rear pads or shoes when the driver applies force. The electronic parking brake replaces the cable with a small electric motor at each rear caliper, controlled by a button. Pressing the button sends a signal to the EPB control unit, which drives the motors to clamp the brake pads against the disc.
Why Parking Brakes Need Maintenance in the UAE
UAE conditions are harder on parking brake systems than many drivers realise. The combination of high ambient temperatures and significant temperature swings between desert nights and summer days causes metal to expand and contract, gradually loosening cable tension and wearing seating surfaces. Sand and fine dust infiltrate cable sheaths, creating friction that makes adjustment more difficult over time. Vehicles that are parked primarily in gear rather than using the handbrake also develop cables that stretch from disuse.
UAE RTA vehicle inspections test parking brake holding force, so a poorly maintained system can cost you a test pass. Most garages recommend a parking brake inspection at every other service interval or any time the lever travel increases noticeably.
Electronic Parking Brake: Special Considerations
EPB systems require specialist diagnostic software to calibrate or replace rear brake pads. Unlike traditional brakes where pads can be compressed manually with a C-clamp, EPB actuators must be wound back electronically using a scan tool that communicates with the EPB control unit. Attempting to replace EPB brake pads without the correct tool will damage the actuator. When choosing a garage for EPB work, confirm they have software compatible with your vehicle make and model.
Parking Brake Service Cost in the UAE
Handbrake cable adjustment is among the most affordable garage services, typically costing AED 100 to AED 250. Cable replacement runs AED 200 to AED 500 including labour. Rear brake shoe replacement combined with cable adjustment usually costs AED 300 to AED 600. Electronic parking brake actuator replacement is significantly more expensive: AED 600 to AED 1,800 depending on the vehicle, with premium European cars at the upper end of the range.
