Car Steering Inspection Checklist for UAE Drivers (2026)
A systematic steering inspection is one of the most important things you can do to keep your vehicle safe on UAE roads. Whether you are performing a quick check yourself or taking the vehicle to a garage, this checklist covers every component that should be examined during a thorough front steering inspection.
Steering Wheel Test
With the engine running, gently rock the steering wheel from side to side without moving the front wheels. Note any free play before the wheels begin to move. More than 25 to 30 mm of free movement at the rim indicates excessive play in the steering system. Also note any vibration, stiffness, or notchiness when turning from lock to lock.
Tie Rod Ends
With the vehicle raised on a lift, grasp each front wheel and push and pull it horizontally. Any detectable play or clunking indicates worn tie rod end ball joints. Both inner and outer tie rod ends on each wheel should be checked. Tie rod boot condition should also be inspected for tears that allow dirt ingress.
Steering Rack or Gearbox
The steering rack should be checked for visible fluid leaks at the boot ends and at the high-pressure hose fittings. On vehicles with a recirculating ball gearbox, the box preload should be assessed for excessive play. Any oily residue on the rack body or boots indicates a seal failure.
Power Steering Fluid Level and Condition
The fluid should be checked when the engine is at operating temperature. A correct level with clean amber fluid indicates a well-maintained system. Black or very dark fluid, or fluid with a burnt smell, indicates the fluid is overdue for replacement. A low level indicates a leak that must be identified and repaired.
Hoses and Fittings
Inspect the high-pressure hose from the pump to the rack and the return hose from the rack to the reservoir. Look for cracks, bulges, chafing, or oily wetness at fittings. UAE heat accelerates rubber degradation and hose wear.
4WD Steering Linkage (Where Applicable)
On 4WD vehicles with a solid front axle, inspect the drag link, idler arm, pitman arm, and centre link for ball joint play and bushing wear. Push and pull each component to feel for movement. Any detectable play in the idler arm, drag link, or pitman arm should be noted.
Steering Coupler and Intermediate Shaft
Ask someone to rock the steering wheel while you observe the coupler and shaft from below. The rubber insert in the coupler should compress but show no play between the yokes. Worn universal joints in the intermediate shaft will show visible play.
