How to Fix Steering Slack in UAE Cars (2026)

Steering slack — also called steering play or free play — refers to the amount the steering wheel can be moved before the front wheels respond. A small amount of free play is normal, but excessive play makes the steering vague, imprecise, and potentially unsafe. It is a common complaint among UAE car owners, particularly those with higher-mileage vehicles or 4WD trucks used for off-road driving.

How Much Steering Play Is Too Much?

Most vehicle manufacturers specify a maximum of 20 to 30 mm of free play measured at the rim of the steering wheel before the front wheels begin to move. If you can move the wheel more than this without the car responding, the steering should be inspected. On highways at high speed, excessive play makes it difficult to hold a precise line and increases driver fatigue.

Common Causes and Fixes in UAE

Worn tie rod ends are one of the most frequent causes of steering play. When the ball joints inside the tie rod ends develop play, the connection between the steering rack and the wheel hubs becomes loose. The fix is tie rod end replacement at AED 200 to AED 600 per side, followed by wheel alignment.

On 4WD vehicles with a recirculating ball steering box (Toyota Land Cruiser 70 and 80 Series, Nissan Patrol Y61, Land Rover Defender), the steering box itself can develop internal wear that causes play. A steering box preload adjustment (AED 100 to AED 300) can reduce this play on mildly worn units. Severely worn boxes require replacement at AED 1,500 to AED 4,000.

A worn steering coupler (the flexible joint connecting the column to the intermediate shaft) can contribute to play that is felt through the steering wheel. The coupler can be replaced for AED 300 to AED 900. A worn idler arm or pitman arm on older 4WD trucks is another frequent cause of play in the system.

Can Alignment Fix Steering Play?

No. Wheel alignment corrects the direction the wheels point but does not fix mechanical play in steering components. However, a wheel alignment is always required after any steering component replacement to restore correct geometry and prevent uneven tyre wear.
