Car Sunroof Problems Guide for UAE Drivers (2026)

Car sunroofs face unique challenges in the UAE. The extreme UV exposure degrades rubber seals faster, desert dust blocks drainage channels, and thermal expansion from rapid temperature changes stresses the glass and mechanism. Knowing the warning signs and causes helps UAE drivers address sunroof problems before they cause expensive interior water damage.

Sunroof Leaking

A leaking sunroof is the most common complaint from UAE car owners after rain events. The most frequent cause is blocked drainage channels, not seal failure. Sunroofs have four small drain holes at the corners that channel water to tubes running through the door pillars and exiting at the bottom of the vehicle. UAE dust accumulates in these drains over time until they block completely. When rain arrives, water backs up and enters the cabin through the sunroof frame rather than draining away.

Prevention is simple: have the drains cleaned with compressed air or a flexible drain snake annually. Cost at a UAE garage is AED 100-250.

Sunroof Not Opening or Closing

Electric sunroof mechanisms use a small motor, drive cables, and a sliding mechanism. Common failure points include worn or snapped drive cables (a common issue after years of UAE heat cycling), a failed motor, or a jammed guide channel. If the sunroof stops mid-way or makes grinding noises, stop operating it immediately to prevent further damage to the cables or mechanism.

Noisy Sunroof

Wind noise from a sunroof at speed usually indicates a degraded perimeter seal or a sunroof that has shifted slightly out of its fully closed position. Rattling noises from the sunroof area while driving on UAE roads are typically caused by loose drain tube clips or degraded foam buffers in the mechanism. Both are inexpensive to fix at a specialist garage.

Glass Cracking

UAE thermal stress can crack sunroof glass, particularly on cars parked in direct sun with the sunroof in a partially open position. Chips from road debris on UAE highways can also spread into full cracks under temperature cycling. A cracked sunroof glass requires replacement rather than repair.
