Car Suspension Noise Causes in UAE: Clunks, Knocks, and Squeaks Explained

Suspension noise is one of the most common complaints at UAE garages. The combination of high-load conditions (heavy SUVs, full passenger loads, roof boxes), speed bumps, and extreme heat puts UAE suspensions under significant stress. This guide explains the most common suspension noise causes and what they mean.

Clunking Over Speed Bumps

A clunking or banging sound when going over speed bumps or rough surfaces is typically caused by worn control arm bushings, anti-roll bar (sway bar) links, or strut mounts. In UAE, where speed bumps are very common and numerous, these components wear faster than the manufacturer expects. Control arm bushing replacement and anti-roll bar link replacement are both relatively affordable repairs.

Squeaking on Turns or Over Bumps

A squeaking noise from the suspension, often present on slow turns or gentle bumps, usually comes from dried-out or worn ball joints, control arm bushings, or strut mount bearings. Ball joint replacement is a safety-critical repair — a failed ball joint can cause the wheel to separate from the car. Any clunking combined with play felt in the steering should be diagnosed immediately.

Knocking from Shock Absorbers or Struts

A rhythmic knocking or hollow-sounding thud from one corner of the car over bumps can indicate a worn or leaking shock absorber or strut. Shocks and struts with worn internal valves produce a knocking sound as the damper piston moves through its travel without proper resistance.

Rattling at Low Speeds

Rattling over rough surfaces at low speeds is often caused by loose or worn heat shields on the exhaust, but can also indicate loose anti-roll bar components or broken suspension springs.

Groaning When Turning

A groaning sound when turning at low speeds, often most noticeable in parking manoeuvres, can indicate a low power steering fluid level, a failing power steering pump, or worn steering rack components.

Action Priorities

Ball joint and control arm failure are safety-critical. Any clunking combined with loose or vague steering feel requires immediate inspection. Use GarageBuddy to compare suspension specialists across all seven UAE emirates.
