Car Suspension Noise Diagnosis in UAE: What Is That Clunking?

Suspension noise is one of the most common complaints from UAE car owners. The variety of sources — from something trivial to something safety-critical — means that accurate diagnosis is more valuable than guesswork. This guide explains how different suspension noises point to different components, and what UAE drivers should and should not ignore.

Clunking Over Speed Bumps or Potholes

A clunking or knocking sound when hitting UAE speed bumps or road irregularities typically indicates worn shock absorber top mounts (strut mounts), worn anti-roll bar (sway bar) links or bushings, a loose or worn shock absorber, or worn control arm bushings. The location of the clunk (front or rear, left or right) narrows the diagnosis significantly. A single hard clunk from the front on each speed bump often points to a strut mount. A multiple-knock or rattling sound from the rear is often anti-roll bar links or a loose exhaust heat shield.

Clunking When Turning

A clunking or clicking noise specifically when turning at low speeds is almost always a CV joint (outer) on front-wheel-drive vehicles. On 4WD vehicles at full steering lock, a similar noise can also indicate worn tie rod ends or ball joints. The distinction: a CV click is rhythmic at low speed on full lock, while ball joint and tie rod noises tend to be single irregular clunks.

Squeaking Over Bumps

Squeaking from the suspension usually indicates dry or worn rubber bushings in the control arms, anti-roll bar, or strut mounts. Silencing squeaking suspension with spray lubricant temporarily is not a fix: worn or dry bushings should be replaced. Polyurethane bushings are quieter and more durable than OEM rubber in UAE conditions.

Knocking at Highway Speed

Knocking or vibration at specific highway speeds (80-120 km/h) is usually not a suspension fault — it is typically tyre balance, tyre damage, or wheel bearing noise. True suspension knock is rarely speed-dependent; it is more likely to be road-input-dependent (bumps, corners).

Finding a Diagnosis in UAE

A proper suspension inspection should include a visual check of all joints and bushings, and a physical check for play in each joint. Some problems are audible on a road test; others require a vehicle lift. Use GarageBuddy to find suspension specialists across all UAE emirates who can provide a proper diagnosis.
