Car Tune-Up Guide for UAE Drivers (2026)

The term tune-up originally referred to adjusting ignition timing and carburetor mixture on older vehicles, but on modern fuel-injected cars a tune-up means replacing the scheduled wear items in the ignition system and reviewing air and fuel delivery components. In UAE conditions, understanding what needs attention and when keeps engines running smoothly and fuel costs under control.

What a Modern UAE Car Tune-Up Includes

For a modern fuel-injected UAE vehicle, a tune-up typically covers: spark plug inspection and replacement if worn or fouled, air filter inspection and replacement if dirty, fuel filter replacement on vehicles where it is serviceable, throttle body inspection and cleaning if carbon-fouled, and a general engine bay and ignition system inspection.

Ignition Coil Checks in UAE Heat

Ignition coils in UAE vehicles are subjected to extreme underbonnet heat that shortens coil lifespan. A coil that is borderline failing may work acceptably in cool weather but fail under UAE summer heat. Coil failure causes a single-cylinder misfire (rough idle, reduced power). If a new spark plug in one cylinder does not resolve a misfire, the ignition coil for that cylinder should be tested or replaced. Coils cost AED 100-400 each depending on vehicle.

Spark Plug Types in UAE

Copper spark plugs (standard, cheapest) last 20,000-30,000 km and are adequate for older vehicles. Platinum and iridium plugs last 80,000-100,000 km and are specified by most modern manufacturers. Always use the correct heat range plug for your vehicle, particularly in UAE where both underbonnet heat and direct-sun fuel temperature are higher than in cooler countries. Using a plug that is too cold for UAE conditions can foul with carbon; too hot and pre-ignition risk increases.

Air Filter Service in UAE

UAE desert dust clogs air filters faster than in clean-air environments. A filter that should last 30,000 km in Europe may block within 15,000-20,000 km in dusty UAE conditions. Inspect the air filter at every service and replace if dirty. A blocked air filter reduces power, increases fuel consumption, and causes the MAF sensor to give incorrect readings, triggering a check engine light.
