Car Tyre Guide for UAE Drivers: Choosing, Maintaining and Replacing Tyres
Tyres are the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road, making them one of the most critical safety components on any car. In the UAE, tyre performance is affected by extreme heat, high-speed motorway driving, desert sand driving, and occasional wadi crossings. Choosing the right tyre and maintaining it correctly is essential for safety and for managing running costs.
Reading UAE Tyre Markings
Every tyre has a standardised marking on its sidewall. For example: 225/55R17 97V. Reading left to right:
- 225: Tyre width in millimetres
- 55: Aspect ratio — the sidewall height as a percentage of the width (a 55 means the sidewall is 55% of 225mm = 124mm tall)
- R: Radial construction (virtually all modern passenger tyres)
- 17: Rim diameter in inches
- 97: Load index — maximum load per tyre. A 97 means 730 kg per tyre. Always match or exceed the original specification.
- V: Speed rating — V means up to 240 km/h continuous. UAE motorway speeds of 120 to 140 km/h are well within V rating. Always match the speed rating for your vehicle.
UAE-Specific Tyre Considerations
Tyre selection in the UAE requires balancing several factors that are more demanding than in most other markets:
- Heat resistance: UAE summer asphalt surface temperatures can exceed 65 degrees Celsius. Tyres that overheat have higher rolling resistance, increased wear, and increased risk of blowout. Choose tyres with high temperature ratings from reputable manufacturers.
- All-season vs summer tyres: The UAE does not get cold enough for winter tyres. High-performance summer tyres or all-season tyres with high heat and load ratings are appropriate for most UAE passenger vehicles.
- Load rating: Large UAE SUVs (Land Cruiser, Patrol, GMC Yukon) are often heavily loaded, especially when carrying a full family with luggage. Using a load index below the vehicle specification risks tyre failure, particularly at motorway speed in summer heat.
- Run-flat tyres: Some UAE drivers prefer run-flat tyres given the distance between service stations in remote areas. Run-flat tyres can be driven at up to 80 km/h for up to 80 km after a puncture, but must only be used on vehicles equipped with tyre pressure monitoring systems (TPMS).
Tyre Pressure and UAE Heat
Tyre pressure increases with temperature. Tyres inflated to the correct cold pressure at 20 degrees Celsius will show higher pressure readings at UAE operating temperatures. Do not deflate hot tyres to reach the cold pressure specification — always check and adjust tyre pressure when cold. In UAE summer, check tyre pressure early in the morning before the vehicle has been driven. The correct pressures for your vehicle are shown on a sticker inside the driver door jamb or in the owner manual, and should be matched to the tyre size fitted.
When to Replace Tyres in the UAE
- Tread depth: UAE law requires a minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tread width. Most tyre safety experts recommend replacing tyres at 3 mm for UAE high-speed and wet-weather safety. Tyre wear indicators in the tread grooves are moulded at 1.6 mm — when flush with the surrounding tread, the tyre is legally worn out.
- Age: Rubber degrades with age regardless of tread depth. In UAE heat, most tyre manufacturers recommend replacing tyres after 5 years regardless of appearance, or at most 8 years from manufacture date (moulded on the sidewall as a 4-digit code: week and year of manufacture).
- Sidewall damage: Any visible crack, bulge, or cut in the tyre sidewall requires immediate replacement. A sidewall bulge indicates internal structural damage and carries a high risk of sudden blowout.
- Puncture condition: A puncture in the tread area can be repaired if it is no wider than 6 mm and not in the shoulder or sidewall. Shoulder or sidewall punctures and any tyre that has run flat require replacement rather than repair.
