Carbon Cleaning UAE 2026: Engine Decarbonisation Costs, Benefits & How It Works

3 Jul 2026 3 min read

If your car has been idling in Dubai traffic for a few years, chances are the engine has accumulated significant carbon deposits. Carbon cleaning (engine decarbonisation) removes these deposits and restores performance, fuel economy and smooth running.

What Is Engine Carbon Cleaning?

Carbon deposits form when fuel does not burn completely — particularly in modern GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) and turbocharged engines. Unlike older port-injection engines, the valves never get washed clean by fuel, so carbon builds up on:

  • Intake valves and ports
  • Piston crown and combustion chamber
  • Injector tips (especially diesel)
  • EGR valve and intercooler

The UAE driving conditions make this worse: lots of short trips, heavy traffic, high ambient temperatures, and sustained idling all contribute to faster deposit buildup.

Types of Carbon Cleaning Available in UAE Workshops

1. Hydrogen Decarbonisation (HHO)

The most common method in UAE garages. An HHO generator produces hydrogen gas fed into the air intake while the engine runs at idle for 30-45 minutes. The hydrogen reacts with carbon deposits at low temperatures, breaking them down so they exit through the exhaust.

Cost: AED 250 – 450 | Time: 45–90 minutes

2. Walnut Blasting

The gold standard for severe GDI intake valve buildup. The mechanic removes the intake manifold and blasts crushed walnut shell media at the valves using compressed air.

Cost: AED 800 – 2,500+ (4-cylinder) / AED 2,500 – 5,000 (V6/V8) | Time: 3–6 hours

3. Fuel System Chemical Treatment

An additive added to the fuel tank or injected directly into the fuel rail. Good for mild injector deposits and maintenance.

Cost: AED 80 – 200

Signs Your Engine Needs Carbon Cleaning

  • Rough idle — engine shakes or vibrates at traffic lights
  • Hesitation on acceleration — particularly from low RPM
  • Misfires — single or multiple cylinder misfires
  • Increased fuel consumption — noticeably more fill-ups for the same distance
  • Loss of power — engine feels sluggish under load

How Often Should You Carbon Clean in UAE?

  • GDI/TGDI petrol engines: Every 40,000–60,000 km or every 3 years
  • Diesel engines: Every 30,000–50,000 km
  • Port-injection petrol engines: Every 80,000–100,000 km

Is Carbon Cleaning Worth It?

For GDI engines in UAE: yes, strongly recommended. Benefits include 5–15% fuel economy improvement, smoother idle, lower emissions, and prevention of expensive misfires.
