Caster angle is one of the four main wheel alignment angles measured and adjusted at UAE workshops. It describes the tilt of the steering axis (the line between the upper and lower ball joints or strut and lower ball joint) as viewed from the side of the vehicle. Understanding caster angle helps UAE drivers understand why their vehicle may pull, feel unstable at speed, or develop handling problems after a collision or suspension work.
What Does Caster Angle Do?
Positive caster (the top of the steering axis tilts backward): promotes straight-line stability at speed. The wheel naturally wants to return to centre after a turn, reducing driver effort. Most modern UAE vehicles have positive caster of 3 to 7 degrees. Negative caster (the top of the steering axis tilts forward): lighter steering feel but poor high-speed stability. Not a factory setting on modern vehicles. Too little positive caster: the vehicle may wander at speed or feel vague and requires constant steering corrections on UAE motorways.
When Is Caster Adjustment Needed?
After a collision: if a front suspension component has been bent or displaced, caster will be out of specification. The vehicle will pull or wander. After suspension lift: lifting the front of a 4WD vehicle changes the caster angle. Most lift kit manufacturers specify a caster correction shim or adjustable control arm to restore correct caster. After upper control arm replacement: on double-wishbone vehicles, caster is set by the position of the upper control arm mounting bolts. After strut replacement: on MacPherson strut vehicles, caster is not easily adjustable unless aftermarket adjustable strut tops or camber correction kits are used.
