Wheel alignment involves three main angle measurements: caster, camber, and toe. Each angle affects tyre wear and vehicle handling differently. Understanding what each one means helps UAE drivers have more informed conversations at the workshop and understand what is being corrected during an alignment service.
Toe
Toe is the angle of the tyres as viewed from above. If the fronts of both tyres point toward each other, that is toe-in (also called positive toe). If they point away from each other, that is toe-out (negative toe). Toe is the most commonly adjusted angle and has the most direct effect on tyre wear. Incorrect toe causes rapid inner or outer edge tyre wear. The correct toe specification varies by vehicle; most modern vehicles run slight toe-in on the front for stability. Toe can be knocked out of specification by hitting a kerb or pothole.
Camber
Camber is the tilt of the tyre as viewed from the front of the vehicle. Positive camber means the top of the tyre tilts outward; negative camber means it tilts inward. Incorrect camber causes one edge of the tyre (inner or outer) to wear faster than the other. Most UAE passenger vehicles run near-zero or slight negative camber. On performance-oriented vehicles, additional negative camber is sometimes deliberately added for increased cornering grip. Camber can be affected by collision damage, worn suspension bushings, or worn wheel bearings (which allow the wheel to tilt under load).
Caster
Caster is the tilt of the steering axis as viewed from the side. Positive caster (top of axis tilts backward) promotes straight-line stability and steering return-to-centre. Most UAE vehicles have 3 to 7 degrees of positive caster. Caster is typically not adjustable on standard UAE passenger vehicles without aftermarket components, but is relevant on 4WD vehicles after suspension lifts and on vehicles with collision-damaged front subframes.
Which Angles Are Adjusted at a UAE Workshop?
Toe is adjustable on virtually all vehicles and is always measured. Camber adjustment depends on the vehicle and may require adjustment shims or aftermarket components if it is out of range. Caster is measured but rarely adjusted on standard passenger vehicles; it becomes relevant on lifted 4WDs and after collision repair.
