A coolant leak in a UAE vehicle is a high-priority fault because the ambient temperature here leaves almost no safety margin. Understanding where coolant leaks come from helps UAE drivers respond quickly and correctly when they see the temperature gauge rising, smell something sweet from under the bonnet, or find puddles of coloured liquid under the car.
1. Perished Coolant Hoses — Most Common UAE Cause
Rubber coolant hoses deteriorate faster in UAE conditions than anywhere else in the world. Heat cycles from cold starts in air-conditioned garages to 50-degree exterior heat and then 80 to 100-degree engine bay temperatures cause rubber to harden, crack, and eventually split. Coolant hoses typically last 5 to 8 years in UAE conditions, versus 10 to 15 years in cooler climates. Squeeze hoses when the engine is cold to check for cracks and hard, brittle texture — if they do not feel flexible and soft, replacement is overdue. A burst hose in UAE summer causes instant and total coolant loss within minutes.
2. Radiator Leaks
The radiator is made of aluminium fins and plastic end tanks in most modern vehicles. UAE heat cycling causes the plastic end tank to crack where it crimps onto the aluminium core, typically at 6 to 10 years. Radiator leaks show as coolant dripping from the front of the engine bay, a crusty white or orange deposit around the leak point, or a puddle of green, pink, or orange liquid on the ground under the front of the car. Radiator replacement is the correct repair, not stop-leak.
3. Water Pump Seal Failure
The water pump circulates coolant through the engine. When the shaft seal begins to fail, coolant drips from the weep hole at the bottom of the pump housing — a deliberate design feature that makes the failure visible before it becomes total. A water pump leak shows as a small drip from the pump area when the engine is warm, typically with a whitish deposit around the weep hole. In UAE heat, a leaking water pump should be replaced without delay.
4. Thermostat Housing Crack
The thermostat housing is often made of plastic on modern UAE vehicles and can crack from heat cycling. Coolant seeps or drips from around the housing or its gasket. This is usually visible as a wet area or dried coolant deposit on the upper engine. Thermostat housing replacement: AED 150 to AED 500 all-in including the thermostat and gasket.
5. Head Gasket Failure — Internal Leak
A head gasket failure is an internal coolant leak where coolant enters the combustion chambers or mixes with engine oil. Symptoms: white smoke from the exhaust (coolant burning in the cylinders), milky or foamy oil on the dipstick or oil filler cap, engine overheating with no visible external coolant loss, and coolant level dropping repeatedly with no puddles under the car. Head gasket failure in UAE vehicles is often caused by overheating from another coolant leak that was ignored. Repair: AED 1500 to AED 5000.
6. Coolant Reservoir Crack
The plastic coolant expansion reservoir can crack from UV exposure and heat cycling. This causes slow coolant loss that may not be visible as a puddle because the reservoir is often mounted where coolant drips onto hot engine components and evaporates. Inspect the reservoir for cracks and discolouration. Replacement: AED 80 to AED 250.
