Drop Arm and Pitman Arm UAE — What They Are and Replacement Costs

4 Jul 2026 2 min read

The drop arm and pitman arm are names for the same component: the forged steel arm that attaches to the steering gearbox output shaft and converts the gearbox rotation into the linear movement needed to steer the front wheels. The term drop arm is used mainly in the UK and Commonwealth countries; pitman arm is used in the US. In UAE automotive usage both terms are common, and the component is found on recirculating-ball steering vehicles including the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 and 80 series, Nissan Patrol GU (Y61), and many commercial trucks.

How the Drop Arm Works

When the driver turns the steering wheel, the steering gearbox (steering box) converts the rotation into a side-to-side movement of the drop arm. The arm pushes or pulls the relay rod (on vehicles with a relay rod and track rod system) or the drag link (on vehicles with a direct drag link from drop arm to wheel knuckle). This movement is transmitted to the wheel steering arms to turn the wheels. The drop arm is a safety-critical component: if it fails or detaches, steering is lost.

Drop Arm Wear in UAE Conditions

Drop arm problems in the UAE typically occur on high-mileage 4WD vehicles used for off-road driving. The splined and tapered bore that attaches the arm to the steering gearbox shaft can develop wear or looseness if the retaining nut torque has not been maintained. A loose drop arm allows excessive steering play and can work further loose over time. The relay rod ball joint socket at the outer end of the arm also wears, causing play detected during a steering check. On UAE commercial vehicles with high mileage, drop arm and relay rod wear are among the most common steering faults found during inspection.

Drop Arm Replacement Cost UAE 2026

Drop arm (pitman arm) replacement: AED 400 to AED 800 for the part on most Toyota Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol applications. Labour: AED 200 to AED 400. A puller tool is required to remove the arm from the steering box shaft without damage. Total cost at a specialist: AED 600 to AED 1,200. A four-wheel alignment check is recommended after drop arm replacement to confirm geometry.
