Drum Brakes vs Disc Brakes — What UAE Drivers Need to Know
Most vehicles in the UAE have disc brakes on the front wheels and either disc or drum brakes on the rear. How Disc Brakes Work
Disc brake systems use a flat circular disc (rotor) that rotates with the wheel. When the brake pedal is pressed, a hydraulic caliper squeezes brake pads against both faces of the disc. Disc brakes dissipate heat more effectively than drum brakes because the disc is exposed to the airstream as the wheel rotates. This makes disc brakes better for high-speed braking, repeated braking on descents, and hot conditions. How Drum Brakes Work
Drum brake systems use a hollow steel drum that rotates with the wheel. Curved brake shoes press against the inside of the drum when the brake pedal is pressed. Drum brakes have a self-energising effect that requires less hydraulic pressure to achieve a given braking force, which is why they remain in use on rear axles of smaller and lighter vehicles where the braking load is lower. The enclosed design of drum brakes makes them effective as parking brakes. However, the enclosed design also traps heat, making drum brakes more susceptible to brake fade under repeated heavy braking than disc brakes.

Check behind the rear wheel. If you see a solid disc with a caliper clamp attached, you have rear discs. If you see a smooth drum-like component without a caliper, you have rear drums.
