Electric Power Steering Problems UAE — EPS Faults, Causes and Repair Costs

4 Jul 2026 2 min read

Electric power steering (EPS) is standard on most modern vehicles in the UAE. Unlike hydraulic power steering, which can degrade gradually and fail softly, EPS typically fails in a more binary way: the system detects a fault, disables the electric assist, and illuminates the power steering warning light. This guide explains common EPS problems on UAE vehicles and what repair costs in 2026.

Common EPS Problems on UAE Vehicles

Torque sensor fault: The torque sensor on the steering column detects how hard the driver is turning the wheel and signals the EPS motor to provide the appropriate level of assist. A faulty torque sensor is one of the most common EPS failures. The steering may feel inconsistent — sometimes light, sometimes heavy — or the power steering warning light illuminates. Replacement cost: AED 500 to AED 1,500 at a specialist workshop.

EPS motor failure: The electric motor that provides the assist can fail due to overheating (common in UAE ambient temperatures), bearing wear, or winding failure. The steering suddenly becomes very heavy and the warning light comes on. Motor replacement: AED 800 to AED 2,500 depending on vehicle.

EPS control module (ECU) fault: The EPS control unit can fail due to heat stress, voltage spikes, or software errors. Some faults can be resolved by an ECU reset or software update. Hardware failure requires module replacement: AED 1,500 to AED 4,000+ depending on vehicle.

Battery and charging system issues: EPS requires a healthy 12V battery and charging system. A weak battery that drops below a certain voltage threshold causes the EPS to disable as a safety measure. This is a common cause of EPS warning lights on UAE vehicles with batteries aged 3 years or more. Replacing the battery often resolves the EPS warning light.

Wiring and connector issues: UAE heat and vibration can cause wiring harness connector failure. A diagnostic scan identifies any related fault codes.
