Hydraulic power steering uses a belt-driven pump to pressurise power steering fluid, which is fed to a hydraulic actuator in the steering rack or gearbox to provide steering assistance. The amount of assistance is proportional to the fluid pressure, which is governed by a mechanical control valve linked to the steering column. HPS has been the dominant technology in the UAE for decades and is fitted to the majority of older Toyota Land Cruisers, Nissan Patrols, and similar popular vehicles in the region. Electric Power Steering (EPS)
Electric power steering replaces the hydraulic pump with an electric motor, which is mounted either on the steering column (column-assist EPS) or directly on the steering rack (rack-assist EPS). The motor provides assistance based on signals from a torque sensor in the steering column, which measures how hard the driver is turning the wheel. EPS systems are more fuel efficient than HPS because the electric motor only draws power when assistance is needed. They also allow variable steering weight, the ability to tune assistance to road speed, and integration with ADAS features such as lane keep assist and active steering. Maintenance Differences in UAE
Hydraulic power steering requires periodic fluid inspection and replacement. The UAE heat accelerates fluid degradation, and the fluid should be replaced every 60,000 to 80,000 km or when it has darkened significantly. Hoses, seals, and the pump belt also require inspection. Electric power steering requires no fluid maintenance. However, EPS faults require specialist scan tools for diagnosis, as EPS warning lights and codes are system-specific. A basic workshop without EPS diagnostic capability may not be able to diagnose or repair an EPS fault correctly.
