How to Buy a Used Car in UAE: Complete Guide (2025)

The UAE used car market is one of the largest in the Gulf, offering a wide range of vehicles from economy sedans to premium SUVs and luxury cars. Whether you are buying from a dealer, a private seller, or an online marketplace, understanding the process and the risks helps you make a confident purchase. This guide covers everything you need to know about buying a used car in the UAE in 2025.

Step 1: Set Your Budget Including All Costs

Before shopping, calculate the total cost of ownership rather than just the purchase price. Factor in registration transfer fees (AED 350 to AED 600 in most emirates), insurance for your first year (typically AED 1,500 to AED 4,000 for a standard vehicle), any immediate maintenance the car requires, and the annual Mulkiya (registration) cost. Leaving no budget buffer for early repairs is a common mistake in used car purchases.

Step 2: Research the Model

Research the reliability history, common fault patterns, and ownership costs for the specific model you are considering. Japanese brands including Toyota, Nissan, and Honda generally have lower maintenance costs in the UAE than European brands. Luxury and European vehicles have higher parts costs. Check the availability of spare parts and the presence of authorised service centres in the UAE for your chosen model.

Step 3: Verify the Vehicle History

Check the vehicle history for accidents, outstanding fines, and financing. In Dubai, the RTA provides a vehicle history check. Check Dubai Police, Abu Dhabi Police, or the relevant emirate traffic authority for outstanding fines. Confirm there are no outstanding bank loans on the vehicle by requesting a bank clearance letter from the seller.

Step 4: Pre-Purchase Inspection

Never buy a used car in the UAE without an independent pre-purchase inspection. A qualified mechanic will inspect the bodywork for evidence of accident repairs, check the chassis for frame damage, test the engine and cooling system, assess the transmission, check AC performance, and inspect the suspension and brakes. A pre-purchase inspection costs AED 200 to AED 500 and is the best AED 500 you can spend before committing to a used car purchase.

Step 5: Negotiate and Transfer

Once satisfied with the inspection, negotiate the price. In the UAE, it is standard practice to negotiate 5 to 15 percent below the asking price, especially for private sellers. Obtain insurance in your name before the transfer. Complete the ownership transfer at an RTA or authorised typing centre with both parties present. Ensure all fines and outstanding fees are settled before transfer.
