What You Need to Jumpstart a Car

How to Jumpstart a Car with Jumper Cables

Step 1: Position the Cars
Park the donor car so the batteries are close enough for the cables to reach. Both cars should be off. Apply handbrakes on both vehicles.
Step 2: Connect the RED Cable to the Dead Battery
Clip the red (positive +) clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery. The positive terminal is usually marked with a + symbol or has a red cover.

Connect the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal of the donor battery.

Start the donor car and let it run for 2–3 minutes to charge the dead battery slightly.
Step 7: Start the Dead Car
Try to start the dead car. If it doesn’t start after 2–3 attempts, wait another 2–3 minutes and try again. If it still won’t start after 5+ attempts, the battery may be too far gone to jumpstart — you’ll need a replacement.
Step 8: Disconnect in Reverse Order
Once the dead car is running, disconnect in the exact reverse order:
- Black cable from the grounded car (the car that was dead)
- Black cable from donor battery
- Red cable from donor battery
- Red cable from the car that was dead
After Jumpstarting: What to Do Next
Don’t immediately switch off the engine once jumpstarted. Drive for at least 20–30 minutes to allow the alternator to recharge the battery. Avoid turning the engine off in between — if you stop for fuel, leave the engine running.
Once home, have the battery and charging system tested. A battery that needed jumpstarting will likely fail again. In UAE heat, if it’s over 2 years old, replacement is usually the safer option.
