How to Prepare Your Car for a UAE Road Trip
The UAE offers some spectacular road trip destinations — the Hatta mountain village, the East Coast beaches at Fujairah, the Hajar mountains via Ras Al Khaimah, the mangrove reserves of Umm Al Quwain, and the open deserts of Abu Dhabi’s Al Gharbia region. Whether you’re driving a family saloon or a capable 4×4, proper vehicle preparation is essential before any long UAE drive. Breakdowns on UAE highways are not just inconvenient — they can be dangerous in extreme summer heat. This guide covers everything you should check and prepare before hitting the road.
Check the Engine Essentials
Before any long drive, check the engine oil level using the dipstick — the oil should be between the minimum and maximum marks and should appear relatively clean and amber in colour. Dark, gritty oil that smells burnt indicates the oil is overdue for replacement. Check the coolant level in the overflow reservoir — it should be between the MIN and MAX marks. If the coolant is very low, the engine is at risk of overheating on a long drive, particularly in summer. Check the brake fluid reservoir level and the windscreen washer fluid.
Tyres: The Most Important Check
Tyres are the single most important pre-trip check. Check tyre pressure when the tyres are cold (before driving, or after driving less than 2 km). The correct pressures are found on a sticker on the driver’s door jamb or in the owner’s manual. Do not use the numbers on the tyre sidewall — these are maximum pressures, not recommended operating pressures. Check the tread depth visually — UAE law requires a minimum of 1.6mm, but most tyre specialists recommend replacing tyres before 2–3mm of tread remains. Inspect all four tyres and the spare for cuts, bulges, cracks, and uneven wear. Do not attempt a UAE road trip on a tyre with a bulge or sidewall crack.
Air Conditioning
The AC is not a comfort feature in UAE summer — it is a safety requirement. A failing AC system in UAE summer can cause heat-related illness within minutes in a stationary vehicle. Test the AC before your trip. It should reach maximum cold within 2–3 minutes of starting and maintain a cabin temperature well below ambient. If the AC takes a long time to cool, blows warm air, or the airflow has reduced, have it serviced before your trip. A low refrigerant level can be topped up quickly at most UAE garages.
Battery and Electrical Checks
A failing car battery is one of the most common causes of UAE roadside breakdowns. If your battery is over 2 years old, have it load-tested at a garage before your trip. A load test takes 5 minutes and reveals whether the battery has sufficient capacity for reliable starting. UAE heat degrades batteries faster than in cooler countries — a battery that starts the car fine in the morning may struggle after sitting in the heat at a rest stop. Check that all exterior lights are working, including indicators, brake lights, and reverse lights.
Emergency Equipment
UAE Federal Traffic Law requires vehicles to carry a warning triangle, a fire extinguisher, and a first aid kit. Ensure your warning triangle is in good condition and your fire extinguisher has not expired. In addition, carry sufficient water for all passengers in case of a breakdown in a remote area — at least 1.5 litres per person. Keep a charged mobile phone and a power bank. If driving off-road in desert or mountain terrain, a tow rope, sand recovery boards, a shovel, and a second spare tyre are strongly recommended.
Plan Your Route and Timing
UAE’s highway network is excellent, but some routes — particularly to the East Coast via Masafi and through the Hajar mountains — involve winding mountain roads. Check your planned route for roadworks, as UAE infrastructure projects can cause significant delays. For summer trips, plan to drive in the cooler parts of the day (early morning or evening) if possible. Avoid arriving at a destination with very little fuel — in some areas of Fujairah and the northern emirates, petrol stations can be 50–60 km apart.
