Lambda Sensor Replacement Cost in UAE

The lambda sensor (oxygen sensor or O2 sensor) monitors the oxygen content of exhaust gases and allows the engine ECU to maintain an efficient fuel-to-air ratio. Lambda sensor failure causes increased fuel consumption, rough running, and a check engine light. In the UAE, lambda sensor replacement costs between AED 250 and AED 700 per sensor at certified garages, depending on vehicle make and sensor position.

Lambda Sensor Prices by Vehicle Type

Japanese and Korean vehicles (Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, Honda, Kia, Mitsubishi) use universal O2 sensors available from suppliers such as NTK, NGK, and Denso at AED 150 to AED 350 per sensor, with labour adding AED 100 to AED 200 per sensor. European vehicles (BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Volvo) require vehicle-specific sensors from Bosch or OEM suppliers at AED 300 to AED 600 per sensor, with labour typically AED 150 to AED 250. High-end and V8 vehicles with four lambda sensors may have higher total replacement costs if multiple sensors fail.

Upstream vs Downstream Sensor Cost

The upstream sensor (pre-catalytic converter) operates in hotter conditions and fails more frequently. It is more critical to fuel economy and engine performance. The downstream sensor (post-catalytic converter) monitors catalytic converter efficiency and is tested during UAE RTA emissions inspections. Both sensors should be checked when a lambda-related fault code is triggered. Replacing only the faulty sensor and leaving the other on a high-mileage vehicle often results in a second repair visit within 12 months.

What Happens If You Drive with a Faulty Lambda Sensor?

Driving with a faulty lambda sensor for a prolonged period causes the ECU to default to a fixed fuel map, typically running rich. This increases fuel consumption by 10 to 15%, accelerates catalytic converter damage from excess unburned fuel entering the converter, and causes an RTA emissions test failure. Replacing the sensor promptly prevents the secondary cost of catalytic converter replacement, which can be AED 2,000 to AED 8,000 depending on vehicle make.
