Car Safety Checks You Should Do Every Month in UAE
UAE driving conditions are among the most demanding in the world for vehicle components. Extreme heat, fine desert dust, and the occasional heavy downpour test every system on your car. Performing a simple set of visual checks once a month takes less than 15 minutes and can prevent mechanical failure, traffic fines, and road accidents. This guide covers the checks every UAE driver should make monthly.
Check All External Lights
Walk around your vehicle and check that all lights are functioning. This includes both headlights (dipped and full beam), both tail lights, both brake lights (ask a second person to press the brake pedal while you observe from behind), hazard lights, both front and rear indicator lights, and the number plate light. A failed brake light or indicator is a traffic fine in the UAE and a genuine safety risk. UAE heat causes halogen bulb filaments to fail more frequently than in cooler climates, making monthly light checks especially important here.
Check Tyre Pressure and Condition
Check tyre pressure monthly using an accurate gauge, ideally when the tyres are cold before the vehicle has been driven. UAE summer heat significantly increases tyre pressure compared to the recommended cold inflation pressure, but the correct approach is to inflate to the recommended cold pressure, not to reduce pressure in a hot tyre. Inspect each tyre visually for cuts, bulges, embedded objects, and uneven wear patterns. The legal minimum tread depth in UAE is 1.6mm, and UAE traffic police do conduct roadside tyre checks.
Check Engine Oil Level
Check engine oil level with the vehicle on a level surface after the engine has been off for at least 5 minutes. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert fully, and read the level. The oil should be between the minimum and maximum marks on the dipstick. UAE heat and high engine temperatures increase oil consumption in some vehicles, making monthly oil level checks more important here than in temperate climates. Low oil level will illuminate the oil pressure warning light only when critically low, by which point engine damage may already be occurring.
Check Coolant Level
Check the coolant level in the translucent expansion tank under the bonnet. The level should be between the minimum and maximum marks. Never open the radiator cap when the engine is hot. A consistently falling coolant level indicates a leak that needs investigation before the engine overheats. In UAE summer, an overheating event can cause permanent engine damage within minutes of the temperature gauge reaching maximum.
Check Windscreen and Wiper Blades
Inspect the windscreen for chips or cracks that may have occurred from motorway stone chips. Small chips in UAE conditions expand rapidly due to the temperature differential between the hot exterior and the air-conditioned interior. Have any chip repaired within a week of discovery. Check wiper blade condition by running them across the wet windscreen. If they streak or skip, replace them. UAE wiper blades should be replaced every 6 months due to the accelerated rubber degradation in UAE heat.
Check Horn, Brakes, and Steering Feel
Test the horn briefly when stationary. A non-working horn is a UAE traffic offence. Note any change in brake feel when stopping from low speed in a safe area. Increased pedal travel, a spongy pedal, or grinding noise indicates brake system attention is needed. Also note any pulling to one side under braking or when driving straight, which can indicate brake or tyre issues. Test the steering for unusual play or vibration at various speeds.
