Night Driving Tips in UAE | Headlight and Safety Guide 2026

Night driving in the UAE presents unique challenges. Long stretches of unlit desert highway, sudden appearance of pedestrians and animals at road edges, and high-speed traffic on major routes all demand good vehicle lighting and safe driving habits. This guide covers essential tips for safer UAE night driving in 2026.

1. Ensure Your Headlights Are in Perfect Condition

Before any long night drive, check that both headlights, tail lights, brake lights and indicators are working. Faulty headlights are an RTA offence and a serious safety risk. Book a headlight inspection at a certified garage if you notice reduced brightness, flickering, or changed light colour.

2. Use Correct Headlight Mode

On UAE highways with no street lighting, use full headlights. Do not drive on parking lights or DRLs alone outside lit urban areas. Switch to dipped headlights when approaching oncoming vehicles to avoid dazzling other drivers. Use high beam on clear desert roads but dip immediately for any oncoming traffic.

3. Keep Headlight Lenses Clean and Clear

Desert dust, sand and insect residue reduce headlight output significantly. Clean headlight lenses regularly. If lenses have become yellowed or hazy, professional headlight restoration dramatically improves light output. This is one of the most cost-effective safety improvements available.

4. Watch for Animals and Pedestrians on UAE Highways

Camels, goats and other animals crossing desert highways after dark are a genuine hazard in UAE. Reduce speed in areas where road signs indicate animal crossing risk. Never assume a clear road at long range as animals are not visible in headlights until close range.

5. Manage Glare from Other Vehicles

High-beam and poorly adjusted headlights from other vehicles are a major hazard on UAE roads. Look toward the left road edge rather than at oncoming headlights when being dazzled. Ensure your own headlights are correctly aligned to avoid contributing to this problem.

6. Maintain Safe Following Distance at Night

Reaction distances increase at night as potential hazards are only visible within headlight range. Maintain a larger following distance than during daylight and reduce speed proportionally on unlit roads.
