Parking Sensor Types: A Guide for UAE Drivers

Parking sensors are now one of the most popular car accessories fitted at UAE garages. With crowded city car parks and narrow parking spaces common across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah, parking sensors help drivers avoid costly bumper damage. This guide explains the different types of parking sensors available and helps you choose the right system for your vehicle.

Ultrasonic Parking Sensors

Ultrasonic parking sensors are the most widely fitted type in the UAE. They work by emitting ultrasonic sound waves and measuring the time it takes for the waves to return after bouncing off an obstacle. The system calculates the distance to the obstacle and alerts the driver through a buzzer or display unit inside the car.

Ultrasonic sensors are drilled into the bumper, usually in sets of four at the rear and four at the front. Rear sensors are the most popular installation. Front sensors help in tight parking situations and low-speed urban driving. Installation takes 1 to 3 hours depending on the number of sensors. Rear ultrasonic kits cost AED 150 to AED 400 installed at UAE garages.

Electromagnetic Parking Sensors

Electromagnetic parking sensors use electromagnetic fields rather than sound waves. A strip sensor is placed inside the bumper, behind the bumper cover, so no drilling is required. This makes electromagnetic sensors a good choice for vehicles with premium painted bumpers or for owners who do not want holes drilled into their car.

Electromagnetic sensors have a wider detection zone than ultrasonic sensors, which means fewer sensors are needed to cover the full bumper width. However, they can sometimes be triggered by wet grass, snow, or other environmental factors. Electromagnetic sensor kits cost AED 400 to AED 900 installed.

Parking Sensors with Display Units

Basic parking sensor systems include only a buzzer that beeps faster as you get closer to an obstacle. Premium systems add an LCD or LED display unit mounted on the dashboard or rearview mirror that shows the exact distance to the obstacle in centimetres. Display kits provide more precise information and are popular among UAE drivers who frequently park in tight spaces.

Parking Sensors with Camera Integration

Many modern parking sensor systems can be integrated with a reversing camera. The camera image displays on a screen (either a dedicated monitor or an existing infotainment screen) while the sensors provide audio distance warnings simultaneously. Integrated camera and sensor systems cost AED 500 to AED 1,500 installed depending on the screen and camera quality.

Choosing the Right Parking Sensors for Your Car in UAE

For most UAE drivers, a rear ultrasonic parking sensor kit provides the best value. It covers the most common parking situations and costs the least to install. Drivers who regularly park in extremely tight spots may benefit from adding front sensors. For premium vehicles or drivers who prefer a no-drill solution, electromagnetic sensors are the better choice. GarageBuddy lists certified garages across the UAE that can advise on and install the right parking sensor system for your vehicle.
