A whining, groaning, or squealing noise when turning the steering wheel is one of the most common complaints from UAE car owners. It is often associated with hydraulic power steering systems and is usually a sign that something needs attention. This guide explains the most common causes of power steering noise in UAE conditions and what each repair costs in 2026.
Causes of Power Steering Noise in UAE
Low power steering fluid: The most common and easiest fix. If the fluid reservoir is low, air can enter the pump and cause a whining or groaning noise, particularly when turning on full lock. Top up with the correct fluid and check for leaks. If no leak is visible, the fluid level should be monitored and the source of the loss found.
Power steering pump wear: As the pump wears, it becomes less efficient and generates more noise. The whining is typically loudest when the steering is on full lock and at idle. Pump replacement: AED 400 to AED 1,200 depending on vehicle (see separate cost guide for full prices).
Power steering hose or line fault: A collapsing or kinked power steering hose restricts fluid flow and causes noise. A cracked hose allows air ingestion. Hose replacement: AED 200 to AED 600.
Steering rack wear: A worn rack can cause groaning or grinding in addition to the characteristic noise of the pump. If fluid has been contaminated by pump debris entering the rack, both components may need replacement. Rack replacement: AED 800 to AED 3,000+.
Drive belt condition: The power steering pump is driven by the accessory belt. A worn or slipping belt causes a squealing or chirping noise when the steering is turned, particularly when cold. Belt replacement: AED 150 to AED 400.
Contaminated fluid: Dark, sludgy power steering fluid can cause noise as the pump and rack try to circulate it. A power steering fluid flush resolves this: AED 150 to AED 300.
Electric Power Steering Noise
Vehicles with EPS do not have a hydraulic pump, so fluid-related noise is not applicable. A clicking or grinding from the EPS motor or steering column when turning indicates a motor or gear fault and should be diagnosed with an OBD scan.
