How to Protect Your Car in UAE Summer Heat
UAE summer temperatures regularly exceed 45 degrees Celsius and cabin temperatures can reach 80 degrees or more in a parked car. This level of heat puts every system in your vehicle under stress. Here is what UAE drivers need to do to keep their cars healthy through the hottest months.
Coolant System
The cooling system works hardest in summer. Check coolant level and concentration monthly. A 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water provides freeze protection down to -37 Celsius and boil-over protection up to 109 Celsius. Pure water boils at 100 Celsius and will not cut it in a UAE summer. Inspect hoses for swelling or cracking, since rubber deteriorates faster in extreme heat. If your coolant has not been flushed in two years, do it before summer.
Car Battery
Heat kills car batteries faster than cold. The UAE climate means most batteries last only 2 to 3 years. Symptoms of a weak battery include slow cranking in the morning, the AC taking longer than usual to cool the cabin after startup, and dimming headlights at idle. Have your battery load-tested before June. Replace it if it shows below 70 percent capacity.
Tyres
Check tyre pressure every morning before driving, as heat expands air and raises pressure by 4 to 8 PSI during the day. Running on overinflated tyres increases blowout risk, particularly on hot motorway surfaces. Inspect tyre sidewalls for bulges or cracking, which are signs of heat damage. If tyres are more than four years old, replace them regardless of tread depth.
Air Conditioning
Your AC system works at full capacity for six or more months per year in the UAE. Common summer failures include refrigerant leaks, condenser blockages from sand and debris, and compressor wear. Before peak summer, have the AC inspected, refrigerant level checked, and the cabin air filter replaced. A clogged filter reduces airflow and forces the blower motor to work harder.
Engine Oil
High temperatures thin conventional engine oil, reducing its ability to lubricate moving parts. Full synthetic oil rated 5W-40 or 5W-50 holds its viscosity better at UAE summer temperatures. Check oil level every two weeks in summer, as heat increases consumption. Do not let the level drop below the minimum mark on the dipstick.
Protecting Your Interior
Use a windscreen sunshade whenever you park outdoors. It reduces interior temperatures by 15 to 25 degrees, which protects the dashboard from cracking and reduces the load on the AC when you restart the car. Tinted windows help significantly; UAE law permits up to 50 percent tinting on side windows for most vehicles.
