Recirculating-ball steering (also called worm-and-roller or steering box steering) is the steering system used on older and heavy-duty vehicles rather than the rack-and-pinion system found on most modern cars. In the UAE, recirculating-ball steering is found on solid-axle 4WD vehicles that remain extremely popular: the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 series, Toyota Land Cruiser 80 series, Nissan Patrol GU (Y61), many Mercedes-Benz G-Class variants, and commercial trucks and buses. How Recirculating-Ball Steering Works
The steering gearbox (steering box) is a separate unit bolted to the chassis, connected to the steering column above and the drop arm below. Inside the gearbox, a worm gear on the steering shaft meshes with a ball nut through recirculating steel balls. The balls recirculate in a circuit to reduce friction as the steering wheel is turned. The ball nut moves linearly along the worm and pushes a sector gear (roller) that rotates the output shaft. The output shaft has the drop arm splined to it externally. As the drop arm moves side to side, it pushes and pulls the relay rod (centre link) or drag link, which steers the wheels via the track rods and wheel steering arms.
Common Recirculating-Ball Steering Problems on UAE 4WDs
Steering play: The preload adjustment inside the steering box wears over time, creating internal play. Some steering boxes have an external adjustment screw that can take up minor wear. Beyond a certain point, box reconditioning or replacement is needed.
Relay rod and drag link wear: The ball joints at each end of the relay rod and drag link wear out, creating play in the linkage. This is normal maintenance on high-mileage 4WDs.
Drop arm wear: The drop arm attachment to the gearbox output shaft can loosen if the retaining nut is not maintained to the correct torque.
Steering box oil leaks: The steering box is a sealed unit with its own lubricant. Seal wear causes leaks; the box must be reconditioned or replaced.
Steering shimmy: Worn steering components allow the wheels to shimmy (oscillate rapidly) on rough surfaces. A worn steering stabiliser (damper) is a common contributor. Correcting all worn linkage components and fitting a new stabiliser usually cures shimmy.
