Servotronic is the BMW and Mercedes-Benz brand name for their speed-sensitive hydraulic power steering system. How Servotronic Works
The Servotronic system adds a speed-dependent valve to the standard hydraulic power steering rack. At low speed, the valve opens fully, allowing maximum hydraulic pressure to the rack for easy manoeuvring. As vehicle speed increases, the DME or EGS control unit sends a signal to the Servotronic solenoid, which restricts fluid flow and increases steering effort for better high-speed stability. The result is light parking-speed steering and firm motorway-speed steering in a hydraulic system.
Common Servotronic Faults in UAE
Servotronic solenoid failure: The solenoid valve that controls the flow restriction can fail electrically or mechanically, causing the steering to lose speed-sensitivity. The steering may feel the same at all speeds (usually too light). Cost: AED 400 to AED 1,000 for the solenoid and labour. Steering rack seal failure: The Servotronic rack seals can degrade from UAE heat, causing fluid leaks. Rack seal replacement: AED 500 to AED 1,200 or full rack replacement AED 1,500 to AED 4,000+. Power steering pump failure: Independent of Servotronic, the pump itself can fail. Pump replacement: AED 800 to AED 1,800 on BMW and Mercedes. CAN bus or wiring fault: The Servotronic solenoid receives its speed signal from the vehicle CAN bus. A wiring or module fault can disable the speed-sensitivity. Diagnosis: AED 150 to AED 300.
