The crankshaft position sensor is one of the most important sensors in a modern engine, providing the ECU with real-time data on crankshaft speed and position. What Does the Crankshaft Position Sensor Do
The sensor monitors a notched or toothed ring attached to the crankshaft and generates an electrical signal pulse for each tooth that passes. The ECU uses this signal to calculate engine RPM, determine crankshaft position relative to top dead centre, and precisely time ignition and fuel injection events. On modern direct injection engines the precision required from this signal is extremely high, and even minor signal degradation causes noticeable symptoms.
Common Signs of Crankshaft Sensor Failure in UAE
The most common symptom in UAE vehicles is an engine that stalls unexpectedly during normal driving and then restarts normally after a brief cooling period. This heat-related pattern occurs because the sensor internal components expand under extreme UAE summer temperatures and temporarily lose contact or signal strength. When the engine cools, the sensor contracts back into operating range. Other symptoms include a check engine light with a P0335 or related crankshaft sensor fault code, difficulty starting especially when the engine is hot, intermittent rough idling at traffic lights, and in advanced cases an engine that will not start at all.
Why UAE Heat Accelerates Sensor Failure
Under-bonnet temperatures in a UAE vehicle parked in direct summer sun can exceed 80 degrees Celsius before the engine is even started. Once running, exhaust manifold radiated heat and the engine block temperature push sensor body temperatures even higher. Crankshaft position sensors use magnetic Hall effect or variable reluctance technology, both of which are sensitive to thermal stress. Diagnosing the Fault Correctly
Not every stalling or rough idle fault is a crankshaft sensor problem. The wiring harness between the sensor and ECU is also inspected for damage, chafing against engine components, or pin corrosion at the connector.
