Worn Steering Rack Bushes

Worn Steering Box (Recirculating Ball Vehicles)
On Land Cruiser, Patrol, and American truck steering box vehicles, the primary cause of excessive steering play is a worn internal ball bearing circuit or a worm gear that has worn beyond the range of adjustment. Steering box adjustment can restore acceptable play if wear is moderate. If the box has worn beyond the adjustment range, rebuilding or replacement is required.
Worn Universal Joints in the Steering Column
The steering column between the steering wheel and the rack or steering box passes through one or two universal joints (U-joints). When these wear, they develop free play that is felt directly at the steering wheel. This cause is less common but does occur in older UAE vehicles and in vehicles that have had the steering column modified or damaged.
Worn Outer Tie Rod Ends
While outer tie rod wear more often produces vibration and pulling than pure play, severely worn outer ends can contribute to perceived steering play particularly during turning, since the joint can shift position slightly before transmitting force.
