UAE Car Insurance Guide 2026: Third Party, Comprehensive and What to Know

Car insurance is compulsory for all vehicles registered in the UAE. Understanding the difference between third party and comprehensive cover, what is and is not included, and how UAE insurance claims work saves car owners significant cost and confusion at claim time. This guide covers UAE car insurance types, typical costs, and what to check before purchasing a policy in 2026.

UAE Car Insurance Types

Third party liability insurance is the minimum legal requirement for all UAE vehicles. It covers damage or injury caused to other people and their property by your vehicle. It does not cover any damage to your own vehicle. Third party insurance is the cheapest option at AED 700 to AED 1,500 per year for most standard vehicles. Comprehensive insurance covers third party liability plus damage to your own vehicle from accidents, fire, theft, and natural events. Comprehensive premiums range from AED 1,500 to AED 6,000 per year depending on vehicle value, driver age, and claims history. Comprehensive cover for a mid-range UAE vehicle (AED 80,000 to AED 150,000 value) typically costs AED 2,000 to AED 4,000 per year.

What UAE Car Insurance Typically Includes and Excludes

Comprehensive UAE policies typically include accident repair, theft, fire, natural disaster damage, and agency repair for new vehicles. Common exclusions include off-road damage (unless specifically included as a rider), damage from driving in a flooded area (relevant in UAE after rare rain events), mechanical breakdown, and wear and tear. Agency repair clauses mean the insurer sends the vehicle to an approved dealer or franchised workshop for repairs, maintaining resale value. After the agency repair period (typically 3 to 5 years for new vehicles), comprehensive policies default to non-agency repair.

UAE Car Insurance Claims Process

After an accident in UAE, call the traffic police to file a report. The police report is required by all UAE insurers to process an accident claim. Exchange insurance details and vehicle registration with the other party. Contact your insurer immediately after filing the police report. Most UAE insurers provide a 24-hour claims hotline. Approved garages will be directed by the insurer for non-agency repairs. Retain all repair receipts for reimbursement under direct settlement policies.
