UAE Car Insurance Guide 2025: Comprehensive vs Third Party

Car insurance is compulsory in the UAE and every vehicle must be covered before it can be registered or driven on public roads. Understanding the different types of cover, what they include, and how to choose the right policy saves money and avoids gaps in protection. This guide explains UAE car insurance in practical terms.

Types of Car Insurance in UAE

Third party liability (TPL) is the minimum legal requirement. It covers compensation for injuries, death, and property damage you cause to other parties in an accident. It does not cover any damage to your own vehicle. TPL premiums start at approximately AED 600 to AED 1,500 per year for a standard passenger vehicle.

Comprehensive insurance covers third party liability plus damage to your own vehicle from accidents, theft, fire, and natural events. Comprehensive is the right choice for most vehicles with significant value. Premiums range from AED 1,500 to AED 8,000 or more per year depending on vehicle value, driver profile, and chosen excess level.

What Comprehensive Insurance Typically Covers in UAE

A standard UAE comprehensive policy covers accidental damage to your vehicle, third party bodily injury and property damage, theft of the vehicle, fire damage, and roadside assistance. Common exclusions include wear and tear, mechanical or electrical breakdown not caused by an accident, and driving under the influence. Agency repair (authorised dealer workshop) can usually be added for vehicles up to 2 to 5 years old at an additional premium.

Key Policy Features to Compare

Agency repair guarantees repairs at authorised dealer workshops rather than approved independent garages. This is important for newer vehicles still under manufacturer warranty. Personal accident cover for driver and passengers pays a lump sum in the event of accidental death or permanent disability. Off-road cover is relevant for 4WD vehicles used in desert driving; standard policies typically exclude off-road use. Natural disaster cover, including damage from flash floods common in UAE, is included in some policies and excluded in others.

Reducing Your Premium

Build a UAE no-claims discount by avoiding small claims. After three claim-free years, discounts of 15 to 20 percent are available from most insurers. Choose a higher voluntary excess to reduce the base premium if you can afford the out-of-pocket cost per claim. Compare policies using UAE insurance comparison websites. Install an approved dashcam: some insurers offer small discounts for dashcam use. Add experienced named drivers to lower the average risk profile of the policy.

Making a Claim in UAE

After an accident, always obtain a police report before filing a claim. Insurance companies in UAE require a police report number for all accident claims. Contact your insurance company within 24 hours of the accident. Do not authorise repairs before the insurance company approves the claim and workshop. Keep all repair invoices and police report copies for your records.

Find Car Garages Approved by UAE Insurers

Garage Buddy lists car repair workshops across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, and Umm Al Quwain. Many listed workshops work directly with UAE insurance companies and can assist with insurance repair claims.
