UAE Car Lights Guide: Which Lights Are Required by UAE Law?
Understanding your vehicle lighting system is important for both safety and UAE RTA roadworthiness compliance. The UAE Federal Traffic Law mandates specific lighting requirements for all vehicles registered in the UAE, and non-compliant lights are a common cause of RTA test failure. This guide explains every light type on a UAE vehicle, what it does, when to use it, and what UAE law requires.
Headlights in UAE
UAE law requires headlights to be used from sunset to sunrise and whenever visibility is reduced by rain, fog, or dust storms. Low beam headlights are required in built-up areas. High beam is permitted on unlit roads but must be switched to low beam when approaching oncoming traffic within 100 metres. Headlight bulb and LED module failure is a common RTA test fail point. Yellowish or cloudy headlight lenses from UV degradation are also flagged during UAE RTA inspections.
Brake Lights and Stop Lamps
All UAE vehicles must have functioning rear brake lights including the high-mounted stop lamp. Brake lights must illuminate immediately and fully when the brake pedal is depressed. A single faulty brake light is sufficient for an RTA test failure. Brake light bulbs should be checked monthly as they are not visible to the driver and fail without warning.
Indicators and Hazard Lights
UAE traffic law requires indicators to be activated for lane changes and turns. Hazard lights are permitted when a vehicle is stationary in an emergency. Using hazard lights while moving in rain is illegal in the UAE and carries a fine. Indicator bulb failure or a fast-flashing indicator are signs of a blown indicator bulb that requires prompt replacement.
Fog Lights in UAE
Front and rear fog lights may only be used during active fog, sandstorm, or severe rain that reduces visibility below 50 metres. Using fog lights in clear conditions is an RTA traffic offence in the UAE carrying a fine. Rear fog lights are particularly important during UAE shamal sandstorms and should be checked for function before the winter fog season.
Parking Lights and Daytime Running Lights
Parking lights or sidelights are used when a vehicle is parked on a road at night. Daytime running lights (DRL) are fitted on all modern UAE-specification vehicles from factory. DRL failure is not currently an RTA test failure point but will reduce visibility to other road users during daylight hours.
