Why Between-Service Checks Matter in the UAE
The UAE driving environment is hard on vehicles. Summer temperatures that exceed 45 degrees Celsius stress cooling systems, tyres, and rubber components. Long daily highway commutes between emirates rack up mileage quickly. Dust and sand work into air filters, brake pads, and door seals. Off-road excursions into the desert put suspension components and underbody seals under load that a standard service interval does not fully account for. Waiting until the next scheduled service — often 10,000 to 15,000 km away — to discover a developing problem can be expensive. This guide covers what UAE drivers should inspect between service visits and how often.
Monthly Checks (or Every 1,000 km)
Engine Oil Level
Pull the dipstick with the engine cold, wipe it clean, reinsert fully, and pull again. The oil level should sit between the minimum and maximum marks. Oil that is very dark black on a low-mileage engine, or milky brown (indicating coolant contamination), should be reported to a garage immediately rather than simply topped up. In the UAE heat, checking engine oil monthly is more important than in cooler climates because heat accelerates oil degradation and consumption.
Coolant Level
Check the coolant expansion tank (not the radiator cap directly) when the engine is cold. The level should be between the minimum and maximum marks. A repeatedly dropping coolant level despite no visible puddle may indicate an internal leak into the engine — a head gasket issue. A UAE summer breakdown due to overheating is both dangerous and expensive. Keep coolant levels correct at all times.
Tyre Pressure
UAE summer heat causes tyre pressure to increase as the air inside expands. Conversely, the cooler winter mornings cause pressure to drop. Check cold tyre pressures at least monthly. Under-inflated tyres overheat more rapidly on hot UAE asphalt, increasing blowout risk. Over-inflation reduces contact area and increases the risk of impact damage on speed bumps, which are common across UAE urban roads. Brake Fluid Level
The brake fluid reservoir sits on top of the brake master cylinder under the bonnet. The level should be between MIN and MAX. A slowly dropping level over time usually indicates normal brake pad wear (as pads thin, the calliper pistons extend further and draw more fluid from the reservoir). A sudden drop in brake fluid level warrants immediate inspection for a leak in the brake lines or callipers. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, lowering its boiling point. In the UAE, where brakes are subjected to heat from both the ambient temperature and stop-and-go traffic in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, brake fluid should be flushed every 2 years or per the manufacturer schedule.
Power Steering Fluid
On vehicles without electric power steering, check the power steering reservoir level and the condition of the fluid. Discoloured or dark fluid indicates contamination. A power steering whine or heavy steering feel at low speeds indicates low fluid or a failing pump. Many UAE vehicles, particularly American SUVs, still use hydraulic power steering.
Wiper Blades
UAE summer UV radiation degrades wiper blade rubber faster than in temperate climates. A wiper blade that smears or skips rather than wiping cleanly is a safety issue. Wiper blades cost AED 20 to AED 60 per blade and take minutes to replace. UAE rain is infrequent but intense when it occurs, making functional wiper blades important when needed.
Every 6 Months or 10,000 km
Tyre Tread Depth and Condition
Insert a 1 AED coin into the tyre groove. If the outer edge of the coin is visible all the way around, the tyre is approaching or below the 1.6 mm legal minimum. In practice, UAE driving conditions — long highway distances, hot asphalt, and heavy SUV loads — mean replacing tyres at 3 mm tread depth rather than waiting for the legal minimum provides significantly better wet-weather braking. Inspect sidewalls for cracks or bulges from kerb and speed-bump impacts.
Battery Health
Extreme heat is the primary cause of car battery failure in the UAE. A battery that is 3 years or older should be load-tested at a garage. A battery that struggles to turn the engine over on a hot morning is showing early failure signs. UAE summer temperature inside a parked car cabin can exceed 70 degrees Celsius, and the engine bay can reach 80 degrees or more, which is extremely hard on battery life. Underbody Inspection
If the vehicle is regularly driven off-road, inspect the underbody every 6 months for bent skid plates, damaged CV boots, oil or fluid seeps from differentials and the gearbox, and any impact damage to the exhaust or brake lines. Off-road UAE driving can dislodge rocks into underbody components without any immediate noticeable symptom inside the cabin.
When to Go to a Garage Immediately
- Oil warning light on: Stop driving as soon as it is safe to do so. Low oil pressure causes engine damage within minutes.
- Temperature gauge in the red: Stop immediately and allow the engine to cool. Driving an overheating engine destroys the head gasket.
- Brake pedal spongy or low: A loss of brake pressure is a safety emergency. Do not drive until the brake system is inspected.
- Steering wheel pulling strongly to one side: Can indicate a tyre blowout (immediate) or severe brake or suspension issue. Inspect without delay.
- Any visible fluid puddle under the vehicle: Identify the fluid and location. Bright red is ATF (transmission). Dark with sulphur smell is gear or diff oil. Coolant is green, blue, or orange and sweet-smelling. Any of these warrants a ramp inspection.
