UAE traffic law regulates vehicle modifications to maintain road safety and ensure vehicles meet emissions and noise standards. Modifying a vehicle without approval from the relevant Road and Transport Authority (RTA in Dubai, ADTA in Abu Dhabi, or the appropriate authority in other emirates) is illegal and can result in fines, vehicle impoundment, and failure of the annual vehicle inspection (Mulkiya renewal). Legal Modifications in UAE
Modifications that are generally permitted with appropriate RTA registration include: window tinting within the permitted visible light transmission limits (minimum 30% VLT for front side windows); fitting UAE-approved aftermarket alloy wheels of the same or within one inch of the original diameter with correct offset; adding towbar or towing equipment for registered trailers; fitting aftermarket suspension lift kits within approved limits for 4WD vehicles (typically up to 2 inches without structural modification); and installing UAE-approved audio and entertainment systems.
Prohibited Modifications in UAE
Modifications that are generally prohibited in UAE include: engine modifications that increase power output, noise, or emissions beyond original specification; suspension modifications that significantly alter ride height or vehicle stance beyond approved limits; body modifications that alter the structural integrity of the vehicle; removal of emissions control equipment including catalytic converters, oxygen sensors, or EGR systems; use of excessively tinted windows below the legal minimum VLT; illegal numberplate modifications including tinted plate covers, non-standard fonts, or repositioned plates; and lighting modifications including coloured headlights or excessively bright LED systems not homologated for UAE use.
Verification Before Modifying
Before installing any modification on a UAE vehicle, contact the relevant RTA or transport authority for a written confirmation of whether the modification is approved.
