How to Read UAE Dashboard Warning Lights
Modern vehicles sold in the UAE display dashboard warning lights that communicate fault conditions, safety alerts, and service reminders from the engine management system and other vehicle computers. Ignoring warning lights is one of the most common causes of avoidable vehicle breakdowns and expensive repairs among UAE drivers. Understanding what each warning light means, and how urgently it requires attention, is a basic vehicle literacy skill for any UAE driver.
Red Warning Lights — Stop Immediately or Very Soon
Red warning lights indicate a condition that requires immediate or very urgent action. Continuing to drive with a red warning light active risks serious vehicle damage or a safety hazard.

Amber Warning Lights — Investigate Within Days

- Check Engine / Engine Management (amber engine symbol): an engine management fault has been detected — could be minor (a loose fuel cap) or significant (a misfiring cylinder or failing sensor); requires OBD scanning to read the fault code
- TPMS (amber tyre symbol with exclamation): one or more tyres are significantly under-inflated — check all four tyre pressures as soon as safely possible
- Service required or oil change reminder: the vehicle has reached a scheduled service interval; arrange a service within the next few days or at the next convenient opportunity
- Transmission warning (amber gear symbol): the automatic or CVT transmission has detected a fault — have the transmission scanned for fault codes before the next long journey
- ABS warning (amber ABS text in circle): the anti-lock braking system has a fault; normal braking still works but ABS function is disabled — arrange diagnosis within a few days
Warning Lights Specific to UAE Driving Conditions
Several warning lights are particularly relevant in the UAE driving environment. The engine temperature warning activates more frequently in UAE summer because ambient temperatures push cooling systems closer to their limits. The tyre pressure warning is triggered by temperature changes: UAE summer heat increases tyre pressure, while the cooler months of November to February cause pressure to drop. Checking tyre pressures monthly and adjusting for temperature is a straightforward preventive measure. The battery warning is more common in the UAE because extreme heat accelerates battery degradation, reducing the reserve capacity that keeps the charging system operating under high electrical load.
What to Do When the Check Engine Light Comes On
The check engine light covers a wide range of possible faults, from a loose fuel cap to a failing catalytic converter. The only way to identify the cause is to connect an OBD-II diagnostic scanner to the vehicle. Most certified UAE garages offer OBD scanning at low or no cost as part of a diagnostic visit.
