The UAE fog season runs from December to February and produces some of the most severe low-visibility road conditions in the region. When and Where UAE Fog Occurs
UAE fog is a radiation fog that forms during winter nights when the ground cools rapidly and moisture in the air condenses near the surface. It is most common between December and February and most intense in the eastern and northern emirates — Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, and the Hajar Mountain foothills — where humidity from the Gulf of Oman and mountain topography create optimal conditions. Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah experience fog less frequently, though events do occur. Fog typically forms overnight and disperses within one to three hours of sunrise, but some events persist until mid-morning. The Abu Dhabi to Dubai E11 highway and the Dubai to Fujairah E611 highway have the highest fog incident frequency in the country.
Car Checks to Complete Before Fog Season
Completing these checks before December gives you time to book any required repairs:
- Fog lights: test both front fog lights and the rear fog light — replace any failed bulb or cracked lens immediately, as UAE law requires working fog lights on vehicles where they are standard equipment
- Wiper blades: worn blades smear water and fog condensation rather than clearing it — any blade that leaves streaks on the screen should be replaced before the season begins
- Washer fluid: ensure the reservoir is full and both front and rear jets are unblocked — washer fluid consumption is high during fog driving conditions
- Tyres: minimum legal tread depth in the UAE is 1.6 mm, but 3 mm or more is recommended for wet fog road surfaces; also check tyre pressure monthly as cold nights reduce pressure
- Headlights and tail lights: confirm all are functioning at full output so other road users can see your vehicle in reduced visibility
- Windscreen: clean both the inside and outside of the windscreen completely — fog condensation is significantly worse on a dirty or film-coated screen interior
- Windscreen defogger: test the rear demister and confirm the front air conditioning clears interior condensation effectively without leaving streaks
How to Drive in UAE Fog
These practices reduce collision risk during UAE fog events:
- Reduce speed to below 50 km/h regardless of posted limits — UAE traffic law permits fines for speeds inappropriate for prevailing conditions even on high-speed highways
- Switch on front fog lights and rear fog light, and use dipped headlights — do not use main beam headlights, which reflect off fog and reduce visibility for both you and oncoming drivers
- Maintain a minimum four-second following distance behind the vehicle ahead — stopping distances increase significantly in reduced visibility on wet fog-dampened road surfaces
- Do not overtake in fog unless you can confirm the road ahead is completely clear of other vehicles
- If visibility drops below 50 metres, exit the highway at the next safe exit and wait for conditions to improve — do not stop on the hard shoulder with hazard lights flashing unless the vehicle has broken down
- Use air conditioning on demist or fresh-air mode to prevent interior windscreen condensation from forming while driving
Fog Lights vs Hazard Lights in UAE
A common and dangerous mistake during UAE fog events is the use of hazard lights instead of, or in addition to, the rear fog light while the vehicle is moving. Using hazard lights while driving in fog is illegal in the UAE unless the vehicle has broken down or is stationary in an emergency. Hazard lights flashing on a moving vehicle are confusing to following drivers because they resemble brake lights and remove all turn signal information from other road users. The correct equipment is the rear fog light — a single high-intensity red light required by UAE regulations on vehicles where it is standard — switched on using the dedicated fog light control and left on until visibility returns to normal.
After Fog Season Ends
After the fog season ends in March, inspect fog light lenses for condensation that may have developed over the winter. Persistent condensation inside the lens indicates a failed housing seal and the unit should be replaced before the next fog season. Wiper blades used heavily during fog and winter rain conditions may need replacement before their usual annual cycle. A general vehicle inspection in March or April is a practical way to identify any components that have deteriorated over the winter driving period and address them before the UAE summer heat season begins.
