Petrol Grades Available in UAE
UAE petrol stations offer three main unleaded petrol grades distinguished by octane rating. Special 95 is the standard grade and is suitable for most passenger cars with naturally aspirated engines that are not designed for high-performance or turbocharged applications. Super 98 is the premium grade recommended for turbocharged engines, high-compression engines, and performance vehicles. E-Plus is a grade available at some stations that contains a higher ethanol blend and delivers a higher effective octane for flex-fuel capable vehicles. Diesel is available at most stations for trucks, SUVs, and passenger cars with diesel engines.
How to Find the Correct Fuel Grade for Your Car
The correct fuel grade is stated on a sticker inside the fuel filler flap of your vehicle. The owner handbook also lists the minimum and recommended octane rating. For most Japanese, Korean, and mainstream European cars the minimum is 95 RON. For turbocharged European and American performance vehicles the recommendation is typically 98 RON. Using a lower grade than recommended in a turbocharged engine causes the ECU to retard ignition timing to prevent knocking, which reduces power and fuel economy and increases engine temperature over time.
Is Premium Fuel Worth It for Older Naturally Aspirated Engines?
For naturally aspirated engines designed to run on 95 RON, using 98 RON petrol provides no measurable benefit in power or economy. The ECU is calibrated for the minimum rated octane and cannot advance timing further to take advantage of the higher octane. Spending on premium fuel for an engine that does not require it is not cost-effective. Save premium fuel spend for vehicles that genuinely require or can benefit from it.
Diesel Vehicle Considerations in UAE
Most diesel vehicles in the UAE market are SUVs and pickup trucks that run on standard diesel available at most stations. Some high-performance diesel vehicles may specify a higher-grade diesel where available. Ensure the nozzle colour matches your filler neck at the station to avoid misfuelling, which can cause expensive fuel system and engine damage.
