Petrol Grades Available in UAE
UAE petrol stations sell three grades of unleaded petrol: E-Plus (91 octane), Special (95 octane), and Super (98 octane). Diesel is also available at all stations serving the significant diesel vehicle population in UAE, including all heavy vehicles, many SUVs, and a growing number of diesel passenger cars. 91 octane (E-Plus) is available at most but not all stations. 95 octane (Special) is the most widely used grade, required or suitable for most mainstream passenger vehicles sold in UAE. 98 octane (Super) is required for high-compression engines including many European performance vehicles and some turbocharged engines.
Choosing the Correct Fuel Grade for UAE Vehicles
The correct fuel grade is specified in the vehicle owner manual and displayed on a label inside the fuel filler flap on most vehicles. Using a lower grade than specified risks engine knock (detonation) in high-compression engines, which can cause engine damage over time. Modern vehicles with knock sensors will retard ignition timing to prevent audible knock, but at the cost of power output and fuel efficiency. Using a higher grade than required provides no benefit in engines designed for lower octane fuel, as the engine cannot advance timing to take advantage of the extra knock resistance without a specific calibration for the higher fuel grade.
UAE Fuel Pricing System
UAE petrol prices are not fixed permanently. They are set monthly by the UAE Fuel Price Committee and announced on the final day of each month, effective from the first of the following month. Prices are set with reference to international crude oil and refined product market rates, meaning prices change monthly and can vary significantly over the course of a year. The current month prices are displayed at petrol stations and are reported widely in UAE media and via the official UAE Ministry of Energy channels and petrol company apps. Diesel prices follow a similar monthly adjustment process.
UAE Petrol Station Network
The main UAE petrol station brands are ADNOC Distribution (Abu Dhabi-based, operating across all Emirates), ENOC (Emirates National Oil Company, Dubai-based), EPPCO (operating under the ENOC umbrella), and some independent retailers. All major stations are open 24 hours and offer full-service refuelling (attendant service) in addition to self-service pumps. Most stations have convenience stores, ATMs, and some have car wash facilities. In more remote areas of UAE including desert roads and some inter-emirate mountain routes, stations may be less frequent, so checking fuel level before undertaking longer journeys is recommended.
