How the Salik System Works
Salik uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. An RFID tag affixed to the vehicle windscreen communicates with overhead sensors at each Salik toll gate as the vehicle passes through. The system reads the tag, identifies the linked account, and deducts the toll automatically without the vehicle needing to slow down or stop. The standard Salik toll is AED 4 per gate crossing. Multiple crossings of the same gate in a day are each charged individually. The Salik account holds a pre-loaded credit balance that is drawn down with each gate crossing. Account holders receive balance notifications via the Salik app and SMS alerts to prompt top-ups before the balance is exhausted.
Salik Tag Installation and Registration
New vehicles registered in Dubai through authorised testing centres have a Salik tag installed as part of the registration process. Vehicles not yet fitted with a tag can obtain one from RTA service centres, select petrol stations, and authorised Salik distributors across Dubai. The tag is installed on the inside of the windscreen in a specified position and linked to a Salik account registered with the vehicle plate details and owner information. A minimum initial balance is required at account opening. Tags should be inspected for correct windscreen adhesion periodically, as a tag that has partially detached may not be reliably read by Salik gates.
Topping Up Salik Balance
Salik accounts can be topped up through the Salik mobile application (available for iOS and Android), the RTA Dubai website, RTA service centres, authorised petrol stations, and select retail top-up points across Dubai. Automatic top-up can be configured in the Salik app using a saved payment card, which automatically adds credit when the balance falls below a set threshold. This prevents unintentional account deficit and the associated complications with vehicle registration renewal.
Using a UAE Vehicle in Other GCC Countries
UAE-registered vehicles are permitted to travel across GCC land borders to Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait. A GCC vehicle insurance endorsement or separately purchased border insurance is required. The vehicle registration card (Mulkiya) must be carried in the original form. UAE driving licences are accepted across all GCC countries. Salik tags are specific to Dubai and are not compatible with toll systems in other GCC countries, which operate their own independent tolling infrastructure.
