UAE Window Tinting Laws: What Every Driver Must Know
Window tinting is extremely popular in the UAE given the intense heat, but it is tightly regulated. Getting the wrong tint applied to the wrong window can result in fines, a failed vehicle inspection, and a requirement to remove the film before re-inspection. Which Windows Can Be Tinted in UAE?
The rules differ by window position. The front windscreen must remain completely clear. No tint film may be applied to the front windscreen except for the factory-fitted solar strip at the very top of the glass. This rule exists because the front windscreen must allow full visibility for the driver, and cameras, radars, and toll transponders must be able to see through it clearly.
Front side windows (driver and front passenger windows) may be tinted but must allow at least 50% Visible Light Transmission (VLT). This means the tint can only block up to 50% of visible light.
Rear side windows and the rear windscreen can be tinted to any VLT level. Many UAE drivers apply dark 5% or 15% tint to these windows for privacy and to keep the rear of the vehicle cooler for passengers.
What Happens If You Get Caught with Illegal Tint?
Traffic police in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and other emirates can issue fines for non-compliant window tint. The vehicle may also fail the annual registration inspection. The driver will typically be required to remove the non-compliant tint before the vehicle can pass inspection. Fines vary by emirate but are typically in the AED 400-800 range for a tinting violation.
How to Ensure Compliance
Always use an RTA-approved or accredited tinting shop. Ask the installer to confirm the VLT percentage of each film being applied and to provide documentation. Reputable tinting shops use a tint meter to verify the final reading after installation, which should account for the factory glass tint already present on modern vehicles. Factory glass itself often absorbs 10-15% of light, meaning the film needs to be lighter than 50% VLT on its own to achieve a compliant combined reading.
Recommended Approach for UAE Drivers
For front side windows, 70% VLT film on factory-tinted glass typically results in a compliant reading. For rear windows, ceramic films at 35% or 20% VLT are popular — they block significant heat while remaining within legal limits where applicable. For the rear windscreen, 20% or lower is common. Always verify with your tinting shop.
