Wheel alignment and wheel balancing are two different services that UAE drivers often confuse. Both affect handling and tyre wear, but they address completely different problems. This guide explains the difference and when you need each service.
Wheel Alignment
Wheel alignment (also called tracking or geometry) measures and adjusts the angle of the wheels relative to each other and to the vehicle. The main alignment angles are: toe (whether the fronts of the tyres point inward or outward), camber (whether the tyre tilts inward or outward from vertical), and caster (the tilt of the steering axis from front to back). Misalignment causes: the vehicle to pull left or right; uneven tyre wear (one edge wearing faster than the other); the steering wheel to sit off-centre when driving straight. Common causes of misalignment in UAE: hitting a pothole or kerb at speed; suspension component wear; suspension or steering component replacement. Alignment should be checked: after any collision; after suspension or steering component replacement; if the vehicle pulls or tyres wear unevenly; every 12 months as routine maintenance. Cost in UAE: AED 80 to AED 200 at most workshops.
Wheel Balancing
Wheel balancing measures and corrects the weight distribution around the circumference of the wheel and tyre assembly. A small weight imbalance causes the wheel to vibrate at certain speeds. Misbalance causes: steering wheel vibration at specific speeds (typically 80 to 120 km/h); vibration felt through the seat or floor at speed; patchy or cupping tyre wear over time. Common causes in UAE: new tyre fitment without balancing; balance weights falling off (common on older alloy wheels with corroded surfaces); driving on unpaved desert tracks that displace weights. Cost in UAE: AED 60 to AED 120 for all four wheels.
Do You Need Both?
Alignment and balancing are separate services and address separate problems. You can need one without the other. However, after any new tyre fitment, both should be done: balance the new tyres and check the alignment.
