Essential Off-Road Vehicle Preparation
- 4WD system knowledge: Know your vehicle’s 4WD modes before going off-road. 4H (4WD High) for firm sand and gravel; 4L (4WD Low) for soft sand, steep climbs, and mud. Most UAE desert driving uses 4H with reduced tyre pressure.
- Tyre pressure: Airing down is the single most important sand driving technique. Reduce tyre pressure to 18–22 PSI (from the standard 35–38 PSI) for sand driving. This dramatically increases the tyre’s footprint and flotation. Carry a portable air compressor to re-inflate when returning to tarmac.
- Recovery gear: Every UAE off-road vehicle should carry: tow strap / snatch strap (rated 8,000–12,000 kg), two D-shackles, a hi-lift jack, a sand board or traction mats (MAXTRAX or equivalent), and a collapsible shovel.

Best UAE Off-Road Destinations 2026
Liwa Mega Dunes (Abu Dhabi): The premier UAE dune destination. Moreeb Hill (300m, 50-degree slope) is among the world’s most challenging dunes. Base camp at Qasr Al Sarab. Distance from Dubai: 4.5 hours. Difficulty: Advanced. 4WD essential.
Big Red (Al Hamar, Dubai-Hatta road): The most accessible UAE sand dune, 55 km from Dubai on the E44. Popular for beginners. Gets very crowded on Friday mornings. Soft red sand, approximately 90m high. Distance from Dubai: 55 km.
Wadi Bih (Ras Al Khaimah to Musandam): A 76 km gravel track from RAK to the Omani border through dramatic mountain scenery. Moderate to advanced. 4WD required. The track crosses 65 wadis and reaches 1,870m elevation.
Hatta Mountain Tracks: Various graded trails around Hatta enclave. Suitable for all-terrain SUVs (doesn’t require serious off-road capability). Scenic mountain and dam views.
Fossil Rock (Sharjah desert): Accessible rocky desert terrain with ancient marine fossil outcrops. Moderate difficulty. Good for beginners venturing beyond sand dunes.
Off-Road Safety Rules in UAE
- Never go off-road alone — always travel in convoy of at least two vehicles
- Inform someone of your route and expected return time
- Carry minimum 5 litres of drinking water per person
