How to Sell a Used Car in UAE 2026: Step-by-Step Guide

2 Jul 2026 4 min read

Selling a used car in UAE can be quick and profitable if you approach it correctly. The UAE has a large and active used car market, and well-presented, documented cars achieve strong prices. This guide covers how to prepare your car, where to list it, what paperwork you need, and how to avoid common pitfalls.

Step 1: Get Your Car Ready

Service and Mechanical Check

A car with a recent service history sells faster and at a higher price. At minimum, do an oil change and ensure all lights work. Ideally, fix any known issues before listing — buyers will use defects as negotiation leverage that exceeds the actual repair cost. Find a pre-sale inspection service to identify issues before they’re discovered by a buyer’s inspector.

Clean and Detail

Presentation is critical. A professional interior and exterior detail (AED 300–600) can add AED 2,000–5,000 to the perceived value of a car. Buyers in the UAE expect a clean car. At minimum, steam-clean the interior, shampoo carpets, and polish the exterior. Find a car detailing service near you.

Fix Small Cosmetic Issues

Paintless dent repair (PDR) for minor dents costs AED 100–300 per dent but can improve the first impression significantly. Scratches on bumpers can often be buffed out by a detailer. These small investments typically return 3–5x their cost in improved sale price. Find a dent removal specialist.

Step 2: Price Your Car Correctly

Research current market prices using:

  • Dubizzle: UAE’s largest classifieds platform — search your exact model, year, and mileage to see active listings
  • YallaMotor and AutoTrader UAE: Alternative platforms with price data
  • Dealer quotes: Call a few dealers for trade-in quotes — this gives you the floor price (what you’d get selling to a dealer). Private sales should achieve 10–20% more than dealer trade-in value.

Price slightly above your target to allow negotiation. UAE buyers typically expect to negotiate 3–10% off the listed price. Set your starting price accordingly.

Step 3: List Your Car

Where to List

  • Dubizzle: Highest reach for private used car sales in UAE. A standard listing is free; featured listings cost AED 50–300 and significantly increase views.
  • YallaMotor: Car-specific platform with a serious buyer audience
  • CarSwitch: Managed sale platform — they handle inspection, listing, and paperwork for a fee
  • Dealer trade-in: Fastest but lowest price — same-day payment, no hassle

Photos

Take photos in good daylight, on a clean background. Include: front 3/4, rear 3/4, both sides, interior front, interior rear, boot, dashboard/instrument cluster, engine bay, and any notable features or accessories. Listings with 10+ good photos receive significantly more enquiries.

Step 4: Handle Viewings Safely

  • Meet in a public place for the first viewing (a busy petrol station or mall car park)
  • Ask to see the buyer’s UAE driving licence before any test drive
  • Accompany all test drives — do not leave the buyer alone with your car
  • Do not hand over the keys until payment is confirmed and cleared

Step 5: Paperwork for Transfer

To complete a UAE used car sale you’ll need:

  • Original mulkiya (vehicle registration card)
  • Your Emirates ID and passport
  • A clearance letter from your bank if the car has outstanding finance
  • Buyer’s Emirates ID and new insurance certificate in their name

Both buyer and seller visit the traffic authority’s customer centre (or an authorised typing centre) together. The transfer is completed on the spot; fees are paid by the buyer. If your car has a loan, the process is: buyer pays — loan is cleared — bank issues NOC — transfer completed. This can take 1–3 business days.

Getting a Good Pre-Sale Inspection

Offering a buyer a recent independent inspection report significantly boosts confidence and can justify a higher asking price. Find a car inspection service near you on GarageBuddy — most offer a written report suitable for sharing with buyers.
