How to Tell If Your Car Needs Ozone Treatment

24 Jul 2026 3 min read

Ozone treatment is the most effective method for permanently eliminating embedded odours from a car’s interior. But not every unpleasant car smell requires it. Here’s how to decide whether your vehicle needs ozone treatment or just a thorough clean.

What Is Car Ozone Treatment?

An ozone generator produces O3 — a highly reactive form of oxygen — which is circulated through the vehicle’s interior. Ozone molecules chemically neutralise odour-causing compounds, killing bacteria, mould spores, and other biological sources of smell that cleaning products cannot reach. After the session the vehicle must be ventilated for at least 30 minutes before anyone enters, as high ozone concentrations are harmful to breathe.

Signs Your Car Definitely Needs Ozone Treatment

Consider booking ozone treatment if you experience any of the following:

  • Cigarette or shisha smoke smell that has penetrated the headliner, seats, and dashboard plastics. This is almost impossible to remove with cleaning alone.
  • Strong pet odour that returns within days of each interior clean.
  • Mould or mildew smell, particularly when you switch on the AC — a sign of biological growth in the ductwork or on the evaporator.
  • Musty smell after rain or flooding, indicating moisture has reached upholstery foam, carpet underlay, or the spare tyre well.
  • A vehicle purchased second-hand that carries an odour from the previous owner despite appearing clean.

When a Regular Detail Is Enough

If the smell is recent and the source is identifiable — a spilled drink, fast food packaging left inside, or fresh mud on the mats — a thorough vacuum, carpet shampoo, and interior wipe-down will likely resolve it without the cost of ozone treatment. Ozone is most valuable when the odour source has had time to penetrate soft surfaces and is no longer easy to locate.

Fix the Root Cause First

Ozone treatment is a remediation step, not a maintenance solution. If your AC smells musty, the evaporator may need cleaning or the cabin filter may need replacing. If there is a water leak, this must be repaired before treatment. Booking ozone treatment while the cause is still active will result in the odour returning within days.

UAE-Specific Considerations

The UAE’s climate creates conditions that accelerate odour problems inside vehicles. High humidity during the summer months promotes bacterial growth in AC systems and upholstery. Sandstorm dust that enters through door seals can carry organic compounds. Vehicles that are used for daily commuting with the windows closed and AC running at maximum for most of the year are particularly prone to interior air quality issues. Regular AC cabin filter replacement every 12–15 months is the most cost-effective way to prevent the need for ozone treatment from recurring.
