If you drive in the UAE, you’ve almost certainly had a stone chip appear on your windscreen without warning. It’s one of the most frequent vehicle complaints across the country. Here’s why it happens and what your options are.
Why the UAE Has So Many Windscreen Chips
Several factors combine to make windscreen chips exceptionally common in UAE driving conditions. First, the road network includes a high proportion of highways where vehicles travel at 120–140 km/h, and even a small stone ejected by a tyre ahead of you carries enormous impact energy at those speeds. Second, construction activity is continuous across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and the Northern Emirates. Construction trucks routinely drop gravel and debris onto highways and service roads. Third, desert sand and fine gravel are carried across road surfaces by wind, especially during shamal (northerly wind) conditions, creating loose material that tyres kick upward. Fourth, many drivers follow at closer distances than recommended on UAE highways, giving less time for debris to settle before it strikes the following vehicle’s glass.
What to Do Immediately After Getting a Chip
Act quickly. A stone chip left untreated in the UAE heat can spread within days. The extreme temperature differential between the cool air-conditioned interior and the sun-heated exterior glass creates thermal stress that propagates cracks from the chip outward. Cover the chip with a small piece of clear tape to keep dirt and moisture out until you can reach an auto glass centre. Avoid high-pressure car washes until the chip is repaired.
Chip Repair vs. Full Replacement
A chip smaller than a 20-dirham coin that is not in the driver’s direct line of sight can almost always be repaired with resin injection. The repair takes 30–45 minutes and costs a fraction of a replacement. Once a crack extends beyond 30 cm, crosses the driver’s primary vision zone, or reaches the edge of the glass, the structural integrity is compromised and full replacement is required. Do not delay: a repairable chip can become an unrepairable crack within a single hot day in a UAE car park.
Using Car Insurance for Windscreen Claims
Comprehensive car insurance in the UAE generally covers windscreen repair and replacement. Many insurers have dedicated glass claim lines and approved garages where you can book directly. Some policies cover chips at zero excess and waive the no-claims discount penalty for glass-only claims. Check your policy before paying out of pocket, as even a full replacement may be covered with only a small document fee.
ADAS and Camera Systems
Modern vehicles with lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, or traffic sign recognition systems rely on cameras mounted behind the windscreen. After any windscreen replacement, these systems must be recalibrated. Skipping calibration can result in inaccurate collision warnings or the system deactivating entirely. Always confirm with the auto glass centre that they can perform ADAS calibration if your vehicle has these features.
